Moving to a new job so have been sending a few emails back & forth to our HR Dept.

There are 4 people in the dept. The most junior is the Senior HR Advisor while the one directly above is the HR Manager!

Christ knows what the top two have as titles!

Senior HR Manager

HR Director

If it was the US they'd have VP...Senior VP and so on

we have a policy here of pick your own email signature

Terrible idea. Last place I worked that did that ended up with some horrific monstrosities in a dozen different fonts that seemed to change on a daily basis. Good way of working out who isn't doing any work, I suppose.

we have a policy here of pick your own email signature and i would say about 90% of people just have what their actual HR appointed job title is but a couple of our network engineers took their competitiveness a bit far.

Both started as Network engineer, then one put senior network engineer, the other responded by putting lead network engineer and of course the other guy put senior lead network engineer.... so after much complaining to their boss (he must have the patience of a saint to keep them both employed) they were told to put it back to Network engineer. couple of days later the qualifications started appearing BSc (hons), CCNA... and of course they started complaining to their boss again and he ended up saying no signatures allow other than Thank you, *****

Many of my colleagues go overboard with the letters after the names. One even has a prize he won in 2001 listed on his.

Second Place, Quiz Night, Phoenix Bar, 2003.  Box of Thornton's Classic Selection.

Can't see that impressing too many people.

Our head of HR is called the Chief People Officer so she can get a TLA like the other board knobs.  We don’t have a head of finance either.  He’s a Chief Revenue Officer.

So we know how many chiefs, doesn't sound like they have a lot of indians to organise

Executive Nursing Director

f**k knows what they do, considering there’s a relatively new position called Nurse Managers in NHS Scotland (above SCN’s). I also assume each hospital has a “Head of Nursing”, so like I said, god knows what an executive nursing director does. There’s loads of superfluous jobs in the NHS as a whole but NHS Tayside has some crackers.

This reminds me of when I ordered some academic books to my office. The site selling had a titles section when you ordered but rather than the standard Miss, Mrs and Mr., it included a much broader list of potential titles.

So for my next few orders I choose:

Rear Admiral

Wing commander

Sultan (generic Scottish name)

As for my job title, rather annoyingly it didn't change for years (not great for the CV) and now it's a verb when it should be a noun. I did get CI added to it though so scrum master will be next.

Can mind reading about Bill Gates buying out a company some years ago. A one man company and the guy had given himself the title of Junior Vice President, not even President of his own company. Think it was called Compu Global Hyper Meganet or something.

The industry moves so fast, it was always hard to tell what they did

This is going off subject slightly but the picture reminds me of a business card I saw a few years ago.  The owner worked for a specialist metalwork fabricator and the card was a thin strip of steel with his name and details all stamped out. Pretty ostentatious or a thing of beauty depending in how you looked at it. Does anyone even have business cards these days?

My ex-wife went to college with a load of graphic designers, and they seemed to have some kind of civil war going on with regard to business cards and resumes, trying desperately to out-do each other with ludicrous designs. One was sending out job applications on black paper with glossy black writing, so it just looked like an empty sheet unless the light shone on it at a certain angle.

Apparently this was a common thing; their instructors all warned them that HR departments weren't interested in their artsy bullshit and would forward anything fancy straight into the shredder, but presumably they didn't get the idea until an extended period working the drive-thru window.

When I worked in a nursing home, I was a "Senior Care Assistant". Not to be confused with "Advanced Senior Care Assistant" and "Care Assistant".

Advanced Senior Care Assistant was a tight-ass way to get someone to do a nurses job without having to pay an actual nurse to do it.
