The financial deregulation of football in 90s/00s western Europe ended east Europe's chances at the top level. Were Agnelli and Perez crying for Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade and Dynamo Kyiv at that time? They only recognise the problem once they start to lose out from it.

The creation of the Premier League in England, the original breakaway super league, has led us to this point in European football. Man Utd were chosen as the flagship club for that project and thus became effectively sponsored by the Premier League's corporate media backers. Murdoch's BSkyB even came close to outright buying Man Utd at one point. So if we want a club that symbolises the neoliberal appropriation of football, they're a good choice.
