The Great Cup: the EOSL clubs in the South Challenge Cup 2022-23

Recommended Posts

Greatest entry of any senior tournament since 1891 with 163 clubs participating. Auchinleck are the holders.

Bonnyrigg no longer feature... Cowdenbeath debut alongside new WOSL clubs Easterhouse, Eglinton, Rossvale Academy, Thorn Athletic and West Park Utd.

Newburgh banned for offences.

Opening pair of rounds are again regionalised - although in practice over 90 clubs get R1 byes.

R1 & R2 draws for zones involving EOSL clubs:

Crossgates v Uni of Stirling and Luncarty v Kirkintilloch eye-up shocks over higher opposition in other leagues, while Glenrothes see OG Broomhill bandwagon/circus roll into town. Armadale v Tranent especially attractive.

Jeanfield will look forward to hosting Cowdenbeath or Cumbernauld Colts, while Sauchie will fancy their chance against Cumbernauld Utd and Musselburgh will hope to shock Gala. Depending on wins in R1 there could be attractive match-ups like Penicuik v Peebles, Heriot-Watt Uni v Edinburgh Uni, Whitburn v Broxburn and Haddington v Tranent.

Camelon 4-2 West Park United
Cowdenbeath 0-2 Cumbernauld Colts
Crossgates Primrose 1-3 University of Stirling
East Stirlingshire 2-0 Kirkcaldy & Dysart
Glenrothes 1-0 Open Goal Broomhill
Kilsyth Rangers 1-5 Hill of Beath Hawthorn
Luncarty 2-3 Kirkintilloch Rob Roy     (aet, FT 2-2)
Rosyth 0-3 Gartcairn
Shotts Bon Accord 6-0 Burntisland

Bathgate Thistle 0-5 Penicuik Athletic
Civil Service Strollers 6-1 Heriot-Watt University
Dalkeith Thistle 0-3 Whitburn
Edinburgh United 4-2 Pumpherston
Ormiston Primrose 2-1 Easthouses Lily
Tweedmouth Rangers 2-3 Dunbar
Tynecastle 2-1 Livingston United
West Calder United 4-1 Edinburgh College

Excellent afternoon's work from the league's representatives.

Glenrothes beating OG Broomhill a particular standout given the gulf in tiers and resources - they'll be crying into their podcasts tonight. Hill of Beath hammered Kilsyth Rangers on their own patch also worthy of special mention. Camelon recovered to see off West Park. Armadale will scent another shock hosting Tranent tomorrow at Bathgate.

Dunbar and Tynecastle both survived apparent scares.

Luncarty led against West Premier leaders Kirkintilloch before ultimately losing narrowly aet. Kirkcaldy & Dysart held East Stirlingshire until 71mins, whilst Crossgates put up a great fight against Uni of Strirling. Rosyth and Burntisland were always likely to be underdogs against Gartcairn and Shotts, although the margins of defeat are perhaps the only clouds on an otherwise silver day.

Just been at the Armadale v Tranent game. Really good competitive cup tie between 2 sides that want to try and play football.

Really impressed with Armadale today. Whether they raised their game today to be playing a bigger side, or whether they actually fancied their chances and just had a go, one thing is for sure... that is a far better side than their current tier 9 ranking would suggest!

Any tier 6 team with any sort of transfer budget should be having a look at their goalie and the lad wearing Number 8 today (Rooster?)

Armadale started the game lively... then out of nowhere lost an early goal. That knocked them out their stride a bit, but they never allowed Tranent any easy or comfortable possession and slowly they started to play some nice triangles and make some runs forward again.

They probably should have been level before the break, but a couple of bad touches in the box, good blocks by the Tranent defence and a good save by the goalie, the went in behind.

Started the 2nd half outplaying Tranent in the midfield. And this is a Tranent side with a good and solid midfield.

But a good break forward by Tranent into the box resulted in a penalty and they were 2 up.

This was possibly where they difference in league standings showed, Tranent were able to run a little more directly and when up against it, find a way to score.

Armadale deservedly got a consolation right at the end and at final whistle, looked to be a lot of respect and well wishes from the Tranent staff to them.

Definitely job done for Tranent. They have survived a real scare and come out the winners in much closer game than I think they imagined.

Not often I say it, but... sympathy to the referee today. The stand side linesman had an absolute shocker. I think I heard someone say it was his first game today... if that's accurate, it showed! About 3 times the ref had to run over to chat with him about what his decision actually was!

He twice flagged Armadale offside as they were chasing the game. The first looked a bad decision, but can almost understand it as a few players were close together... a couple would have been off, but the lad that gathered the ball and went through with just keeper to beat, was definitely on.

The second was just abysmal... again Armadale player running in from left wing to go through on goal was flagged offside... must have been on by near to 10 yards... played on by the left fullback who was closest player to the linesman!

As ref said to the Armadale bench both times, he's got to trust the linesmans decision as he has the better angle and was in line with play...

And as this "quick" post turns into a bit of an accidental essay... a final word on Creamery Park... my first time seeing it's new enclosure and it's a really nice, moden standing area. Not dissimilar to the safe standing areas you see in continental stadiums. Three tiers of spacious standing area. Could become a standard addition for clubs looking to get their licence. The stantions at the front are a little annoying as can block the view... but the only real negative comment is, I think they've built it a little far from the pitch!

The goalie's just moved there from a tier five side (Bo'ness United). Great keeper

That's a very good bit of business done there by Armadale. He looked a really good keeper on todays showing.

Is he on loan? Or a permanent deal?

Got to agree, looked a VERY solid keeper and had a couple of excellent saved. The RB was brilliant too,  the winger he was up against was good. The one time he was caught out of position and the covering player gave away the penalty.

The linesman was a disaster... he should've been on the other side away from the shouts from the stand as he completely shat the bed. Denied Dale a couple of breakaway chances and didn't seem sure himself what decisions he was giving.

Never 3 divisions between the teams but we've done the reasons behind that to death now. Tranent never looked like losing it though

Armadale are comfortably a Premier or division 1 team. It’s just circumstance they are where they are.

Rooster was captain of Linlithgow only 12 months ago and although all getting into their 30s. Strickland, him and Leiper if still playing are all good players. Would imagine them and Bo’ness will go up twice in the next two years with Whitburn and Syngenta a year ahead. Will take a good 3 or 4 seasons for everyone to find their right place and these 10-0s to start disappearing.

At the end of all this if the LL finally open up the pyramid will have been a great success, but you can already see the EOS has been handled really well, it’s just a shame it didn’t all happen at once and we would have this conference x in the wrong place.

Sensibly and unsurprisingly this weekend's 64 cancelled ties in R2 have been rescheduled to the date of the next round (Sat 15th Oct) - which effectively leaves the cup running to last season's pattern.

Useful to have a big gap between the original dates for the semis on 1 April and the final on 28 May, no doubt that'll be filled.

Delayed from 5 weeks ago by HM Queen Elizabeth II's passing, this weekend sees R2 belatedly go ahead... starting with a pair of ties tonight.

Dunbar v Preston, Haddington v Tranent, Jeanfield v Cumbernauld Colts and Musselburgh v Gala look especially attractive, alongside several intriguing East-West clashes.

Tough draws for Penicuik, Linlithgow and Blackburn against solid LL teams - ditto Kinnoull and Musselburgh at WOSL Premier outfits while Dunbar and Edinburgh South face strong WOSL First sides.

Dundonald, Glenrothes, LTHV and Sauchie should be favourites against lower level West clubs.

Jeanfield should easily dispatch Lochar.
