What's this "no minimum wage" shit?

We borrowed their idea, as on many things.

Like most countries i can't see the US as inherently good or bad.

Sure, they egged us on into illegally invading iraq but then they made It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Multiple mass shootings vs the cheeseburger.

Support for Israeli occupation vs Surfer Rosa.

Etc

I think we should also recognise that the US military's willingness to take WW1 scale casualties in WW2 was critical to the survival of democracy, however flawed current versions may be.

There is one. Federal minimum wage for a tipped job - so waiters, bar staff etc - is $2.15, which is why they work for their tips. For an untipped job - everything else basically - it’s $7.25

States and cities are allowed to set their own tho. In Illinois as a whole, that goes to $8 and $12 for tipped and untipped and then in Cook County (Chicago, essentially), it’s $9 and $15.

The cultural faultlines now run so deep that down the line I wouldn't be 100% surprised if the whole shebang breaks up in a Yugoslavia-style scenario, with the relatively more liberal - and affluent - west coast and north-east going their own ways and leaving the shithole states to morph into Gilead

If - if - that ever happens it's a long, long way off.

Too many vested interests for the USA to break up like that, imo.

You don’t sound as if you’re much of a go- getter.

Socialist Scotland is the place for you.

I wonder how my health insurance (and premiums) would have held out these last 3 years - 4 different monthly prescriptions, now augmented by another 4, a month's hospitalisation, multiple x-rays, at least 4 scans, 3 ecgs, 4 hormone implants per year at £400.00 a skite, glaucoma tests, consultations with 3 different specialists, a month's radiotherapy treatment.

Maybe if they had been a bit more accurate with their artillery fire they could have reduced that a wee bit...

Shooting big guns a lot is more important than pointing them the right way.

An absolute shitehole of a place.  It's genuinely mental why anyone would move there from another country.

It depends where they're coming from - plenty shitholes worse then the USA hard as that is to believe.  Also, too many folk fall for the hype and the "American Dream" stuff that may have been true 50 years ago.

They're even worse (partly because of American policies).

Where I am now, it's pretty much the dream of many to move to the US and marry a rich American (all Americans are rich of course) and they've seen and heard so many others who have done that.  However, those who have may be being more than economical with the truth and paint a picture not exactly in line with reality.  And, they only hear from the "successful" ones and the less successful are never heard from again so there's little or no balance.

To many it really does appear to be a utopia.

Although we unfortunately have racism here, it's nowhere near as  bad as it is in the US.

The big thing that stops me using racism as a stick to beat the USA with too much is the fact that it was the result of slavery and the triangular trade, which built some awfy nice buildings in Glasgow.

It is brutal though and no amount of representation at the highest level can distract from it.

He doesn't actually believe that. He's just an attention-seeking welt
