Reserve League

The reserve league which was infinitely better than all the pish reincarnation attempts since, was scrapped at the behest of Gordon Strachan (Celtic), Walter Smith (Rangers), Jimmy Calderwood (Aberdeen), Mark McGhee (Motherwell), Craig Levein (Dundee United), and John Hughes (Falkirk). They headed up a special SPL “think tank” and the conclusion they reached was to scrap the reserves.

There was no Think Tank.

there was one meeting that happened 6 month before the Reserve League was scrapped to talk about the way forward. The scrapping of the reserve league was done by execs and due to money issues and running larger than necessary squads for no return.

They chose between U21s and reserve league a few seasons before scrapping the reserve league. They made the wrong choice.

HMFC want to have full age groups from our academy up to under 18/19 or 20 and reserves.

That is why you keep trying to push your B team into the leagues with your OF buddies and everyone else keeps telling you to f**k off.

Think tank: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/clubs-consider-abolishing-spl-reserve-1004448

The recommendations of scrapping it were put to the 12 clubs of the SPL, and they voted in favour.

They preferred a development league, and the reasons for all but two of the clubs who voted in favour was down to the cost.

Your “old firm buddies” stuff is just a bit tragic, but it is funny watching you continually try and suggest a ludicrous scenario where HMFC want to spend more money than is necessary because we want to be like our old firm buddies. The fact you are even suggesting that rather than accepting the very clear points I provided about player development at my club is proper tinfoil hat stuff.

Having a proper reserve set up like every other top league of any note in Europe should be considered a prerequisite, not some invented form of keeping up with the Joneses. Since clubs are toiling to afford it through our shite TV deal and prize money, I get that many clubs do not want to sign up to it. To try and flip that on the clubs that do want it is just obtuse though.

That backs up what I am saying. there was no Think Tank of Managers. they attended one meeting of the working group.

And the working group is an ongoing committee that looks to see if any changes are needed. The current working group moved to scrap regionalised groups in the league cup.

What is a proper reserve set up btw? The EPL has no reserve league right now. they scrapped their reserve league for an u21 league, now u23 mainly due to compensation ending after u23 level.

Someone needs to let Steven Naismith know that we are only participating in this lowland league carry-on so that we can pretend to be like our old firm buddies. He seems to be labouring under the illusion that it is beneficial for player development:

You've got this laddie comprehensively TELT several times now.

His position is simply that, regardless of the facts and evidence, he doesn't like Hearts.

I'd just leave him to it.

I'm all in favour of bringing back the Reserve League. Play the games on a Friday night under floodlight and allow ST Holders in free.

One thing I noticed was the real struggle many Championship and League 1 clubs are having in getting players in, BBC Article below. Scottish League Cup: Clubs facing recruitment 'nightmare' ahead of season - Jim McInally - BBC Sport Lowland League clubs can pay more.

Surely loaning players aged 18-22 out to these sides would be the best option of all for development players that premiership clubs think could make it.  As it stands Hibs Development team will be playing a multitude of friendly games in the North of England and then back at East Mains against Development/Reserve sides from the likes of Barnsley, Middlesboro, Huddersfield etc as Hibs  walked away from the old development league as it was not competitive enough. But whether this is the right approach remains to be seen.

Dev team will be playing B teams from down south, Premiership colt teams, lower league and lowland league teams.

Our fixtures will be midweek, allowing players to step into the 1st team as required.

We will also have a team competing in the Challenge Cup which will feature eligible U21 players.

In addition, The U18 side who won the league will have a team in the EUFA U19 tournament. Some of those players, if good enough, will also step up to the Dev Team.

Logically it would seem like a competitive u21s league would be an important part of continuing to bring through young players. I'm quite content from an Aberdeen perspective with the club doing what they think is best, as frankly they've been outstanding at bringing through youth players in recent years, so they clearly know what they're up to.

Resrve league returning for 22/23

The Scottish Professional Football League can today confirm the return of the SPFL cinch Reserve League as it announced the fixture list for season 2022/23.

The SPFL cinch Reserve League, which is backed by the SPFL’s title sponsor cinch, is to be reintroduced following discussions with member clubs.

The League was paused in season 2019/20 due to the pandemic and will now kick-off for the first time in over two years on Tuesday September 6.

There are a total of 10 clubs taking part in the SPFL cinch Reserve League 2022/23, and clubs will play each other once across the season.

Matches are scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoons although fixtures and venues are subject to change.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer our member clubs the opportunity to be able to play SPFL cinch Reserve League football again, after the League was originally paused due to the pandemic.

“We would also like to thank our partners at cinch for its support of the SPFL cinch Reserve League and its fantastic ongoing backing of the Scottish game.”

The Scottish Professional Football League can also confirm the return of the cinch Reserve Cup for season 2022/23. The draw and fixtures for the cinch Reserve Cup will be published on Tuesday August 2.

The following clubs will compete in the SPFL cinch Reserve League and SPFL cinch Reserve Cup:

SPFL cinch Reserve League

Ayr United
Dundee
Dundee United
Hamilton Academical
Hibernian
Kilmarnock
Livingston
Motherwell
Queen of the South
Queen’s Park

SPFL cinch Reserve Cup

Ayr United
Dundee
Dundee United
Dunfermline Athletic
Hamilton Academical
Hibernian
Kilmarnock
Livingston
Motherwell
Partick Thistle
Queen of the South
Queen’s Park

Fixture can be found here. The league being only a 9 game single round robin is a bit pish tbh.

1 game a month (with 0 in January) seems unnecessarily low, but I imagine it's come as a result of some clubs saying they're using it for rotation (match fitness/keep fringe players playing) and don't want a clogged up schedule in the event of cup (or Europe) progression?

Good that it’s back, but seems anti-climactic given there’s only going to be a total of 9 league games. Pretty poor turnout in terms of numbers in the league too seeing as there used to be 2 tiers within the reserve system.

For part-time teams in the southern half of the country the Lowland Development League is more viable as games are Friday night. Seven SPFL teams take part currently.

As for number of games the League Cup format is tbd either two groups of six playing once or four groups of three playing twice.
