The draw for the TradeRadiators South Region Challenge Cup is due to take place on Sunday @ 19:00. Doesn't look like it will be a streamed/live draw to the public.

The first two rounds are to be regionalised again.

The West Region are having their AGM on Saturday and are expected to accept new members. If everyone's accepted there should be 165 teams in the draw.

  • 16 Lowland League
  • 80 WoSFL
  • 59 EoSFL
  • 10 SoSFL

Draw debuts for Cowdenbeath and from the WoSFL: Easterhouse, Eglinton, Rossvale Academy, Thorn Athletic, and West Park United.

First Round: 20th August

Second Round: 16th September

Can't say I'm a fan of the regionalisation early on being kept.

I don't think they've worked out a compromise on what the financial model should look like. It is the cup that covers travel expenses and they only take in money from the Final and sponsorship. The expenses on opening up early on would bankrupt the competition.

I don't like regionalisation either, however in the current climate with ridiculous fuel costs and the knock-on effect on bus hire costs, it's probably sensible for now.

I think it works right now. There were a decent amount of inter-league games that were thrown up in the first two rounds last season. It seems more of a practical decision.

2019-20 and 2020-21 probably used a lot of any saving the cup committee had banked. The 2019-20 final that was eventually played had a headcount of 450 and the most 2021-22 final only had 899. Plus I doubt that TradeRadiators.com is putting in a ton of money.

Seen it said elsewhere the travel expenses minimum distance has been increased to 80 miles. If they kept to the old 50 miles plus they would have paid out £5,850. That was with the regionalisation. If it had been a true open draw it would have bankrupted the competition. The 80 miles marker should have seen it top up the bank balance.

I'm hoping this is the last season of the SCC. It was never really designed to be scaled up the way it has with all the new entrants. Seeing it confused as the South of Scotland Cup etc doesn't help it either. They've got to come up with something new that works. It would help if the all the SFA members in the non-league asked the SFA to dig in the back of sofa cushions for some loose change. The £20k that the SCC (40k combined for the SCC/NCC) supposedly got from the SFA for the first two years would be massive.

They should just call it the Challenge Cup.   That name has largely been dropped by the SPFL (SPFL Trophy) so why not use it, even better if the SFA can be persuaded to chuck in some sheckles, in which case the SFA Challenge Cup.

Perhaps that needs looked into,  either to a split gate with a reduced contribution to travel costs or a a percentage of takings going to the central pot to help cover travel costs .

Yes.

Some form of levy on gate takings into a central pot for travel costs would certainly help. I have no idea how much the sponsor puts into the competition, but it is high profile enough to demand a decent fee.

Home club keeps all the gate and the club's in the final don't get anything. There's no prize money. There was a history of travel expenses paid after 50+ miles but that apparently changed to 80+ miles.

I don't think many people have focused on tinkering with the South Challenge Cup as there has been the proposals from within the leagues for a national non-league cup and the SJFA's proposal of expanding the Junior Scottish Cup.

The cup we have & the rules that make up it originated as a SoS/EoS inter-league cup where crowds would be very lucky to round up to a 100. Became a focal point with the creation of the Lowland League. Now though it is no longer fit for purpose.

Tinkering at the edges: reintroduction of regionalising the early rounds/amending the travel expenses. Isn't going to solve the problems.

The SPFL Trust sponsor it which is why it is called the SPFL Trust Trophy. The competition is still called the Challenge Cup in the same way that the League Cup is still the League Cup even though Premier Sports currently sponsor it.

The SFA already run a cup competition.

Maybe the LL could put some money in. They must be flush now

Still no reason not to adopt the name by simply dropping "South"
