You probably were not even born in ‘86. Of course there were decent players in the national side, but he was the absolute difference between them even getting to the final and winning that WC. Very few people outside of Argentina would be able to tell you who played for Argentina in ‘86. I witnessed his debut for Argentina and he was absolutely incredible.

You would have to be a pretty sheltererd football fan to not know Jorge Valdano who was La Liga foreign player of the year that year starring for Real Madrid.

But I'm not trying to convince you, just pointing out it's a commonly held myth.

Argentina were hardly no marks, they won the world cup 8 years prior. Passarella, the captain then, was kicked out of the team by Maradona in 1986 but still ended up with a medal as part of the squad (the only player to win a medal in both tournaments).
