2022/23 UEFA Nations League

Amongst the hilarity there’s a point to be made that Southgate’s England rely so heavily on playing at Wembley.

You could probably count on one hand the amount of times they’ve won away from Wembley against non-diddy countries the past few years.

I was away to point out how much horseshite that is until I looked at the stats.  By god, they really aren't good away from Wembley.

You'd imagine there's a slim chance of Southgate getting punted but carrying this form into a World Cup (with a squad this good) could have glorious consequences.

The squad isn't actually that good though, they are distinctly average in central midfield (Kalvin Phillips!) whilst their goalkeeper and defence is ropey as hell.

They have a few good right backs and a few good attackers, but their squad won't be in the top 5 at the World Cup.

For betting in England isn't this usually the case anyway?

On a side note Gareth Bale scored a 92nd minute penalty to make it 2-2 away to the Dutch only for the home side to nip up the other end of the pitch and score in the 93rd minute to win it 3-2.

Decent night all round.

Was tremendous, twice in a row as well, as if the Dutch are just toying with them.

Not to distract from England's humiliation, but what's going on with Italy? European Champions to World Cup elimination by Macedonia and a 5-2 humping by a less than stellar Germany within a year.

He's playing a very experimental Italian side though, not many players carried over from the Euros final last year.

But yeah, maybe, it's not as if Italy doesn't have a shortage of great managers to call on. What a find Gnoto has been though.

If you thought the Dublin debacle was bad, England out-doing us with an absolute stinker of a result and performance. That's woeful, can't remember the last Scotland had a result that bad.

On what planet are Man United (these days), Everton, Palace and Leeds players going to win you the World Cup?

Edit - Its 2010 all over again, when they had Portsmouth and West Ham players playing.

The same planet were Sassuolo and Fiorentina players win the Euros?

One of England's faults since the time of Eriksson was picking players based on their club and fitting them to a system of play when there were often players at other clubs who fitted those roles better. Trying to shoe horn Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes into midfield, for instance, when the gaffer should have bit the bullet and dropped one and called up some jobber from Charlton who could at least tackle.

But, also, the players Southgate are picking from those clubs are a bit shite as well.

England have all the ingredients to be this year’s “big team that have a major bust up in the camp and crash out in the groups” country at the World Cup.

France are probably due one of them as well but their group opponents Tunisia and Australia might be shite enough that they sneak through by default.

The squad is almost unrecognisable from the one that won the Euros. They tasted success last year and rather than dining out on that he seems to be trying to advance the team by bringing in newer faces.

Yeah countries with players playing for small teams win stuff all the time. England are the only European country to have made two major semi finals in the last four years, so they are of course going to be among the favourites in Qatar, they've got a fairly easy group too. Their team and manager is largely unchanged in that period.

Bizarre and hilarious result last night right enough, but i doubt it will have much bearing going into the World Cup. Just like France not winning any of their four nations league games against Austria, Denmark and Croatia doesn't change the fact that they will also be one of the favourites.

I really hope there is an England version of P&B somewhere, it would be a brilliant read today.

There are some - one boy is suggesting they get Glenn Hoddle in to help Southgate out, while it also contains this genuine quote with absolutely no self awareness

My guess is that in the group stage of the WC England will play 0-0 against Iran and end up second placed in the group stage. They will then lose in the first knock out match. In addition France will not win their group and the winner in Englands group will face the easiest way to a semi final ever.

Highly unlikely to happen, because England got drawn with Wigtown and Bladnoch, Dukla Pumpherston and Hawick Royal Albert in their group as usual.

Just watched the highlights there. No way did Stones deserve to be sent off, the play acting from the Hungarian guy done him but I have zero sympathy for him. Harry Kane's dive earlier was outrageous so if its ok for him to do that its ok for Stones to be done up like a kipper. What goes around comes around
