League One 22/23 Table Predictions

Recommended Posts

So far most folk seem to be going for a top four of: Falkirk, Dunfermline, Airdrie and QOS.  Understandable at this very early stage based on assumed relative budgets, FT sides, other mince, etc, etc.  However, its very possible that at least one of these four perceived "likely lads" will get a shock and will struggle (especially for a just-relegated club slipping downwards - hope to christ I'm not tempting fate here Queens) as logic alone tends not to survive too long into a season.

Again, and understandably, most are going for a bottom three of Clyde, Edinburgh City and Peterhead for similar-ish (but opposite) reasons as above.  Most fear for Clyde as their woes continue unabated with a return to a nomadic lifestyle.

This leaves Kelty, Montrose and Alloa as the likely "loose cannons" in the middle of the pack.  I've got very scant knowledge of these sides/squads/capabilities but one (or more) of this group could very likely displace one or more of the currently perceived top four, and Montrose under Petrie have built a very strong reputation now at L1 level.  Kelty will have £££ to spend but under new management, so difficult to call.  Alloa of course will always be a hurdle too far for Queens.

A few seem to favour us finishing top. I take it nobody has noticed that our striking options thus far are Jaime Wilson,Finlay Malcolm and Gary Oliver .  Add to that we have the same powderpuff midfield no marks we had last season with the addition of McGinn and a couple away. A lot of work still to be done in those areas if we are to be near it.

Think Queen of the South looking good for a top 2 finish now...

Agree with these general groupings and especially the sense that a perceived bigger team at the top can find it much tougher but its still so early to tell. At this stage expectations/predictions can swing so quickly with a couple of squad updates (good or bad).

Feeling optimistic about QOS after our morning activity but a couple big signings from a Kelty or Airdrie and could be back to biting your hand off for a play off spot.

Have a feeling Montrose won't be as strong as they have been recently. Just a sense that they might have reached a plateau under Petrie. Ballantyne is a big loss for them/gain for Airdrie.

Aye we're shaping up really I think. I'll wait until the season is about to start before predicting. We've moved up a place or two in my prediction already [emoji38]

Looking at Airdrie team on paper they looked like they were playing above their level going and just had a good thing going with Murray. Not sure they’ll be able to do that again either to be honest

Agree about Montrose. Be a big group of teams going for fourth spot. Only teams that it looks out of reach for are Clyde and Edinburgh City

I may well be massively overestimating Falkirk and underestimating Montrose there. Liable to be a real rammy at the top; wouldn't be a surprise to see any of the top five ending up champions.

Even if we do well, it's a tough league this season and 4th would be a success.

One of Queens many failings last season was our ability to find the net (opponent's net that is).  Still not sure that we look too clinical up front (Reilly, Paton and Ruth at the moment) and we could probably do with another forward thinking midfielder.  So wouldn't be pitching us higher than a play-off spot at this date.

Too early for this tbh but might as well make some predictions that can be laughed at in a few months.

Struggle to see us winning the league with our current squad. We have to at least challenge for the title though.

Falkirk are favourites IMO just because of McGlynn. They won't be good to watch but they'll win a lot of games.

Queens and Airdrie *should* be battling near the top but both have very young managers. Recruitment will be key.

I'd have had Kelty as certain Top 4 before they hired Potter. Wouldn't be surprised if they struggled badly but maybe they have enough budget to undo his management?

Alloa and Montrose are more than capable of competing for the play-offs too. Petrie has done a fine job for many years but they often get dismissed or written off.

Would expect Peterhead, Clyde and Edinburgh to all struggle.

Queens

Airdrie

Montrose

Alloa

Kelty

Peterhead

Maybe inexperienced the better choice of phrase than young.

Rob puts it perfectly; Gibson only has a few games under his belt as a manager so it's difficult to know how good he'll be.

McPake is similar age but already has 100 matches behind him as a boss. Doesn't mean he's a guarantee by any means ofc.
