EPL 2022/23

Obviously not that realistic anymore but they should sign Rice, Kane & De Jong.

Punt Ronaldo and his ridiculous wages. Consign Fernandes to the bench along with the jokers that are Fred & McTominay.

What’s happened to Varane? Been absolutely shite since he joined.

To whom exactly?

Austrians?  It's the only reason I could think of for Man U to sign Arnautovic, would be a desperately poor signing from a footballing perspective

If they don't sign Arnautovic I could absolutely see them going for someone like Mauro Icardi

There is no doubt that McTominay and Fred get extra criticism because of their nationality (or rather what their nationality isn't).

There is plenty of other players playing worse who are on far higher salaries, consider Rashford, Shaw or Maguire (only saved by the ref from the funniest penalty concession ever at the weekend). Or former darling Fernandes who has been dreadful for some time.

I wasn't surprised to see McTomiany start on ETHs first game and expect, even if they do sign another midfielder, he will be getting plenty of appearances throughout this season. There is a reason why every manager he has played for has rated him.

Doesn't seem to wilt under the fickle pressure of social media which is credit to him too. Probably won't be complaining to the press about death threats like Maguire was.

And, to state the obvious, Arnautovic, Rabiot and Icardi are all hilariously bad signings - please make it happen.

Kalajdzic and Savic are hardly inspired but reasonably competent.

Yeah, because no one ever criticises Harry Maguire. 4A0C309C-6B26-4029-BF71-BB446AEBBF05.png.93bd6401839417f33d8430f372b40067.png

McTominay and Fred are mince. By far the worst midfield of any of the ‘big six’.

I never said they were never criticised, the criticism towards McTomiany and Fred does seem over the top relative to other (higher profile and more expensive) players especially since the Brighton game.

McTomiany seems trusted by every manager he's ever played under. Probably isn't as bad as the armchair fans and the daft pundits they follow say.

I mean, he’s been a part of the worst United era of my lifetime. He wouldn’t get a game for any of the other big six and when he’s punted from United he won’t sign for any of them. He’ll get picked up by a lower half team - could see the likes of Everton signing him.

Maguire is comfortably the most ridiculed player at the club, and in the country. Shaw was ridiculed for years which has only died down recently due his form improving a couple of seasons back slightly. Rashford is starting to get much more criticism now but has credit in the back from being a 'local boy' and Utd fan, and having shown in the past that he can be a good asset when on form. There is zero evidence that McTominay or Fred get more stick due to not being English. They all get stick because they aren't of the level required to compete with Liverpool or Man City. The stick should of course be aimed at the club for their recruitment meaning that these guys have to get a game.

Saw a clip of Ben Foster talking to that Man Utd fan (Goldbridge, Goldberg?) and when they were talking about McTominay Foster was saying that all the Watford players on their coach after the game thought he was really good. Seems to be one of those players that managers and fellow pros appreciate but fans don't for whatever reason.

It must even more galling for them to have seen one of their multi-billionaire fans try to buy Chelsea with a view to further grow them while their club continues to rapidly decline under the Glazer ownership, owners the godlike Fergie helped bring in. I think they're the only owners that take money out of their club, certainly at that level. It'll never change with money obsessed owners, a board full of their money obsessed family and one of their banker chums appointed to run it on a day to day basis. It's what can happen when you go public so they've only themselves to blame.

He's getting the exact same treatment that Jordan Henderson got for years (although Liverpool were trying to flog him for some of that time, Man Utd have never tried to flog McTominay). Fletcher got it plenty during his career as well, albeit that was before the fickle mess of social media.

It's hard to shine in this dreadful Man Utd side, on his Utd form Raphael Varane is one of the worst centre backs in the 'top 6' rather than the 4 times CL and world cup winner that he is.

It wasn't so long ago the dreadful Harry Winks was starting for Spurs or when McTominay had probably his best game ever dominating Kalvin Phillips at Leeds.

Trying to compare Fletcher and McTominay.

Fletcher had a role and executed it very well, he was ridiculed at the beginning because he wasn't doing as such. Much the same as Ji Sung Park was. It wasnt because he wasn't English either.

McTominay is being ridiculed - quite rightly - because he's trying to do more than the sum of his parts. There's no reason he can't stay at United as back up if he learns discipline and the fact that he just isn't as good technically as those around him.

Fletcher was hounded by many Man Utd fans throughout his career (as well as the standard Keane having a go at him). It's an entirely fair comparison. I appreciate some people have a rose tinted view of the past, but even in the less fickle age Fletcher got plenty of stick from fans.

McTominay has been a stater for years, under at least 3 different managers (ETH to be decided). I expect both he and the manager know his game and limitations far more than you do.

And big 6 central midfielders include luminaries like Lo Celso, Ndombele, Phillips, Winks, Xhaka, Elneny, Lokonga, Bissouma, Hojbjerg, Bentancur etc.

To suggest McTomiany is far worse than all of these player? Nah, it's pretty far fetched. Xhaka is another example of a pretty good player who got a lot of unnecessary and unwarranted stick from his own fans.

McTominay has played 171 first team games over 7 seasons and not won anything.

Darren Fletcher played 342 first team games over 13 seasons and won the following at Man Utd:

Premier League: 2006–07, 2007–08, 2008–09, 2010–11, 2012–13

FA Cup: 2003–04

Football League Cup: 2009–10

FA Community Shield: 2003,2007, 2008, 2010

UEFA Champions League: 2007–08

FIFA Club World Cup: 2008

It’s quite ironic that McTominay has played exactly half the number of games that Fletcher played for Man Utd. McTominay may well have been “trusted” by the managers he has played under, but not one of those managers won anything of note during the time of McTominays first team days.

Fletcher had serious illnesses during his time at Man Utd and serious competition for a first team jersey. What competition does McTominay have? £47M Fred? Fred’s signing and Pogba’s for £89M sums up all that is wrong with Utd at this time. Pogba left on a free transfer The 2017 League Cup and Europa League are the only trophies of Pogba’s six-season spell.

John McGinn would have been a better option than Fred. Utd could have signed Meatball for under £3M.

In May 2020, former teammate Rooney cited Fletcher as an important member of the successful 2006–09 United side, describing him as being as "vital" to the team as himself, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Carlos Tevez, and saying he sacrificed his own individual acclaim for the team.

So McTominay has 171 games left at Man Utd to try and win the trophies that Fletcher won. Good luck with that.
