Scottish Cup 2022/23

After the FA Cup having a bit of a stooshie with it, what's happening with VAR in the Cup this year. Premiership grounds only is a disaster waiting to happen. Surely it's been binned for the Cup?

VAR is only coming in at the semi-final stage.

The Scotsman reported that it will be in operation from the fourth round at televised games from Premiership grounds. So Celtic v Morton (which I’m sure @virginton will be delighted about), Hibs v Hearts and St Johnstone v Rangers will seemingly have it.

Other ties with the Premiership team at home will need an agreement between the teams involved as to how the costs would be covered.

We voted against this VAR pish, but on the flipside it might prevent Celtic getting penalties for shite like this.

Referees being against them and all that.

Celtic v Morton

The rules now also allow for goal line technology to be used so presumably this game will have it (as the first stadium outside Hampden to use it for a domestic match).

VARs and AVARs have only been appointed for the televised games at Premiership grounds; so Celtic v Morton, St Johnstone v Rangers and Hibs v Hearts.

In fact, only the televised games (including Darvel v Aberdeen) have fourth officials. I’m sure it used to be that all games involving top flight clubs had fourth officials at this stage.

Only three other games could have had VAR officials, but the Premiership clubs probably didn't think it was worth it as they were playing diddy clubs like Dumbarton, University of Stirling, and Dundee.

Why and with what authority have the SFA media department decided goals scored in the Preliminary Round don't count toward the Top Scorer award any more?

Mackenzie of Darvel is tied with Hester, not 1 goal behind, and Grant of Dunipace is ahead of them both.

Quick look at what different faces we might see next season. Perhaps not that many.

I heard or read somewhere that "5 or 6" clubs are going for licences. That isn't to say they'd all succeed. If right several must be in WOSL which would be as expected. Over in EOSL just Bo'ness Athletic and Leith definitely have compliant grounds while Armadale and Oakley look like being well along the way (but Oakley's lights would need upgraded). Nobody else currently have the essential elements. Of course ground facilities aren't the sole factor - also considerable pavilion criteria and many qualifications + policies needed, which prove beyond some clubs capabilities. There might be 1 or 2 from SOSL and Tayside going by murmurings about improvements/etc. Whatever the reality there is certainly much less 'noise' than previous years.

There could be as many as 5 or 6 league qualifiers: up from 4 this season. Loch Ness look almost certain to win North Caledonian; with BoD having ascended Culter or Hermes will prevail in duel for North Junior title; nobody except Lochee Utd is licensed in Tayside race; nobody at all is licensed in SOSL race; and Beith currently lead WOSL albeit pursued by Darvel and Auchinleck.

There will be 2 cup qualifiers (maybe 3 if Dundee East Craigie or Glenafton win Junior Cup). Amateur Cup is at QFs with Cupar v Tollcross, Doune v Steins, EK Thistle Colts v Tannochside and EK Rolls Royce v Cowie this Saturday. Luncarty, Renfrew, and either Abbey Vale or Creetown will contest the Cup-Winners' Shield - latter pair also in SOSL title race but history says unlikely to win Shield.

On the debit side... Syngenta don't look like putting in an appearance next season - club has collapsed and haven't fulfilled an EOSL game for 4 weeks.

If for sake of argument there were 5 new licensed clubs and 8 qualifiers then the initial preliminary round would need reinstated - by my reckoning contested solely by those 8 qualifiers. For each club fewer than 5 or 8 some qualifier would receive a random bye e.g. 4 and 7 means 2 ties & 4 byes.
