Does anyone have one of these old houses with a chimney?

Maybe going back to coal and or burning wood in a fireplace this winter if you can might be the way to go for some.

I do but the urchin we send up to clean it got stuck on Tuesday, I’m sure as shit not paying the cost of getting him removed.  Hopefully he will have dislodged by the time the cold weather sets in.

Repeatium repliudum absurdum

Just admit you got it wrong and that Hinckley doesn't get a subsidy for painting and decorating

What did I get wrong.  How much to the nearest £0 has Hinckley C had in subsidies so far and how much will it get in subsidies in total?

Except if you have a council house in Aberdeenshire, where as part of the council's commitment to reduce carbon footprints they are blocking chimneys and installing electric heating.  Fucking madness, even without the price increases, electric was the most expensive way of generating heat for your home.

Are they forcing people to have their chimneys blocked?  Or incentivising it by offering cheap electric heating or something?

Madness regardless.

Agree. A Tory/Libdem/Independent coalition (with the Tories as lead partners) is always likely to have some absolutely mental policies.

Well done you.

Um.....this Energy Bill Support Scheme £200 for every household over 6 months from October towards the energy bill. Yes I've been told I'm getting £66-67 per month (£400??) from Scottish Gas without my permission. I'm on a fixed tariff so I pay for what I have used that month and fortunately don't need help paying, while someone else will certainly need it more than myself. Ofgem in the article says £200 which is nearly no help at all for a family on low income, so if Ofgem had bothered to ask people like me in this country you know a concept that seems to be on the way out called choice, choice to participate then those people in need would have had more money in this EBSS (£9.1bn) to share and help them over the winter even if its a grant or whatever they want to call it, a debt.

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/ebss-energy-bill-support-scheme-statutory-consultation-suppliers

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/ebss-energy-bill-support-scheme-statutory-consultation-networks

'Energy suppliers will apply the grant payment to customers’ accounts, with the government recovering the grant via a levy. From April 2023, this levy will be gradually recovered from customer bills through network charges. Recovery will continue over the following 5 years, during which time the expectation is that wholesale energy prices fall.'

In theory?????

That is the optimistic lets-not-panic-everyone about the economy being wrecked scenario.

These c**ts want everyone in debt and state dependent and this EBSS protects the energy suppliers potential record profits this coming winter. Keeps those with power happy and any discontent by the public will be easily condemned by the big businesses owned UK Government supporting MSM and there will be a justification to slap down protesters by force and call them bad names like socialists and left wing militants.

Anyone who can shed further light on this EBSS welcome, including anyone with an opposing view point.

I suppose the rationale of making it universal is down to the sheer complexity of differentiating between the haves and have nots. Better to get it out than get mired in bureaucracy.

Maybe there’s a mechanism for you to pay it back or decline as I think you can do that with the OAP?

Fixed it for you. An SNP/Green Governing coalition does have some absolutely mental policies.

Think you need to keep up.  It’s no longer a £200 loan to each household.  It was changed to a £400 grant ages ago so no, they aren’t putting you in debt with this.

What! I can't help pointing our simple truths?

What a fantastic comeback!

Who are running Aberdeenshire Council at the moment?

Can we agree that they have some really mad policies?

All I did was ask Strichener for info.  I never even made a point about the make up of the council.

Aye got that.

The detail of your earlier post might have been in error,  but your point is a fair one.

My position is that I'm about half way through a 2 year fix.  It is already slightly lower than the prevailing rate,  so obviously I'm happy I did it.  On the support payments, I will hold onto them. If there are those who feel that they don't actually need them, that's fine, there's nothing to say that they can't donate an equivalent amount to charity - a food bank or similar -  or,  if you know someone who IS struggling,  just give it to them. Some of my wealthier fellow retirees already donate their winter heating allowance to charity and I'd imagine they'll carry on doing that.

There's another issue for me.  Just because my energy supplier hasn't gone bust, that doesn't mean they won't,  particularly if they have a lot of folk on longer term, cheaper rates.  If my company goes bust,  my account will be passed on to one of the big companies, who'll slap me on to their standard rate at that time.  If that happens, the amount of the government grant, as presently known of, will disappear like snow off a dyke.  So,  I'm keeping my options open as far as the grants are concerned and if it transpires that I don't need it I can think about what to do about charities later on.

TBH, this has been long overdue and a fantastic change in the law for women.

Presumably it will be cheap brands but this is a great start nonetheless and fair play to the Scottish government for introducing it.

Right to free period products becomes law in Scotland - BBC News
