Energy Prices

Just recieved an email from bulb, due to the Govt's energy price guarantee my electricity is reducing by...by 0.3p per kw/h. Standing charge is staying the same though.

The " where you live" imo should not come into account.

Second year in a row my energy supplier has informed me of a DD raise based on them over-estimating my gas usage be a factor of two or three. I've been with them for years and my usage is entirely consistent for all the time I've been with them. I complained last year and they cancelled the raise, so I'm on to their CS again. Really no excuse for this nonsense when my usage is practically identical down to the last kw/h for years on end. It's one of the bunch who were officially warned for imposing artificially large DD's. Arseholes 😡

At a certain point, it’s worth the loss of the small discount for DD to cancel it and go to pay as billed, is it not?

Can you not just log into your account online and alter your DD without having to contact their CS all the time?

Otherwise, if you can budget for it, swap to a variable DD so you still get the savings on a DD, but just pay for what you use each month.

Ordinarily aye, but I'm a really low user and my bills are pretty much within a couple of quid of each other month to month, so there's no excuse for them trying to DD me 15-20% above my actual consumption.

It's a small supplier who don't do online account management beyond the basics, and they don't do variable DD either.

I don't really have a problem with that as they're really up front about their business model and the reasons why they don't do certain things, I'm just annoyed that for the second year running they have claimed that the proposed increase is 'based on my usage' then quoted a figure that is complete nonsense. The electricity estimate is bang on, as it was last year, so I think it's just their software having a fit and being unable to reconcile that I'm an unusually low consumer of gas.

It's fixed now anyway. They have an online direct chat feature, which is massively preferable to sitting on the phone for hours.

Last month I had a credit balance of about £700. I received an email from E-On on Tuesday stating my balance was £11,692DR. Went online and registered my actual readings then yesterday received an updated balance of £290 in credit. A few hours ago received another statement giving a balance of £980. These c***s are just making it up as they go along. I’m calling them tomorrow to get funds withdrawn and pay monthly for what is due as it’s become a bit of a shit show on what is apparently the convenient way.

I'm with EDF and you used to be able to do this, and the help pages tell you where to go to change your DD.... but EDF have removed the ability to vary your DD.

We contacted them via the chat with the title 'i want to change my direct debit' and they went into a 6 message rant about how they know more than me and my DD is set to what is best for my account. My first message was i want to increase it by £25 and their reply was 'i have done that for you now'

I am sure they get a lot of people who are struggling and want to reduce their payment but at least let me tell you want i want before shooting me down and telling me you know more than i do.

We got a smart meter back in September through Shell. There were teething problems (no bill for 4 months) but all good now and the app has helped us budget: £1.62 an hour to have the gas central heating on so 4 hours a day equates to about £200 / month just on the heating. Will be a lot of people getting a shock once their bill comes in after this cold spell.

We don't have a smart meter on the gas, so for the last few days I've been taking meter reading every day and plugging them onto a spreadsheet. The last couple of days the gas has been costing £11 odd a day, so I'm hoping with the temperatures rising a bit this reduce going forward.

We were new boiler, pipes and radiators 6 years ago so we're fortunate that the house heats up pretty quick. Still a huge hike compared to 12 months though. Some people will have paid a bomb the past 2 weeks just to keep warm.

It's an utter failure of regulation.

Not really, It's a massive failure of policy.

The remit of the regulator from the very beginning, was to make it very easy to become an 'energy supplier'

to retail customers.  What that came down to was, among others, rather a lot of outfits comprised of little more

than a couple of bods, with a laptop, and a website.

It only took a supplier of significant size, Bulb, to fail..., for the limitations of the policy remit to be fully exposed.

The people who've come out of this laughing, is not Bulb, not their customers, not the regulator, not the government,

not the taxpayers.

Octopus Energy, though,  must be ecstatic.   They've acquired Bulb, and it's 1.5 Million customers for a figure estimated to be

around £100 Million. That's chickenfeed.  Meanwhile, taxpayers have to absorb the £4.5 to £6 Billion that the Westminster

government incurred in taking over Bulb when it went bust.

So it's a policy failure.  Privatisation of the profits. Socialisation of the losses.

Not quite correct, Bulb has cost over £1bln.  The £4.5bln is what Octopus has received from the government in funding guarantees.  No wonder the other suppliers are going to court.  Not even the lottery offers such returns.

That’s insane. My dads sitting similar to you £600.00 on credit and is being told to set up a £400pm direct debit.

He’s sitting monthly payments of £200.00 as a non direct debit. It’s a joke.

When I moved house no matter who I moved too insisted on a smart metre.

One went in in September but has never sent readings. However EDF have never updates the serial number of metres on my account so I can't put manual reading in.

Did some back if a fag packet and I think I've been £950 in electricity since then.

This month, the OVO website wouldn't let me enter meter readings. I called them yesterday to say it still wasn't working, still no statement generated for January and still no £66 payment been made this month.

The girl on the phone was very helpful, took the readings. The online system is having some sort of major issue, apparently. Hope it gets sorted out soon - I don't want to have to change supplier again. Leaving Scottish Power was just a ball-ache.
