Coal has killed thousands per year in direct industrial accidents alone in any significant producing country over 200-odd years. That's before you look at the long-term health effects on workers and the rest of the population in air pollution. Worrying about the safety of nuclear power because of a couple of high-profile accidents is as irrational as being feart of flying while choosing to drive every day. Fortunately we don't even need to rely on nuclear alone as a reliable power source, but it should definitely be part of that mix instead of the total nonsense that is domestic gas burning. This 100% , people don't know the difference between hazard & risk Hazard- something with the potential for harm risk- likelihood of harm occurring Flying involves more hazards than driving, nuclear power generation has more hazards than coal or gas, they both have much much lower risks
AsimButtHitsASix
Wow. That is a big increase. Thank f**k Scotland is Europe's third largest producer of oil and third largest producer of renewable energy. Would be fucking mental if, despite that, our energy prices were some of the highest in Europe.

On the former there seems little point immediately coming to a decision since it'll inevitably go up yet again and the support package will need to be revised upwards again. I don't see how long this can hold. It is to a fair extent a consequence of government sanctions against Russia (a political decision) that we're in this position. Energy bills of nearly £4k a year is into the realms of punishing the domestic population because Russia did a bad thing. It's hard to say that without sounding like an utter dick, but the consequences for our domestic population are becoming severe. Business energy rates are not subject to the price cap and thus is just going to send prices and inflation higher again also. The EU is probably going to have to ration gas to.prevent Member States running out of it in winter. The taps might not turn off in the UK as only a small amount comes from Russia, but fucking hell we'll be paying through the nose for it.

MuckleMoo
Sure I heard Martin Lewis reporting that there are now several petitions advocating complete non payment of energy bills, along the same line as the resistance against the poll tax. Idea being that if enough people take part (talking millions) the energy companies/government will be forced to take more radical steps to reduce costs as there will simply be to many people to prosecute and/or shut off supply. Have doubts that enough people would voluntarily sign up to such action but it's completely possible that millions will not pay simply because they can't
