2022 Scottish Local Elections 5th May ** Official Match Thread**

Recommended Posts

Had Willie Rennie at the door this afternoon, campaigning with the local Lib Dem candidate. I’ve no idea who to vote for, but was refreshing to hear him only talk about local issues, when a lot are still campaigning on national issues.

Should’ve asked him why his is the only non-main road in Perth to be gritted when it’s icy. Only time I’ve seen him lose his shit.

The bold Willie still makes some, if somewhat surprising, impact on younger voters. My older lad couldn't even remember the present leaders' names - at either Holyrood or Westminster. He says "Willie Rennie sounds like something you'd take if your boaby got indigestion."

He’s so unforgettable I got him confused with one of the Perth Lib Dem councillors ffs.

Shite picture, but this is an advert for 2 Libdem candidates in Inverness, incumbent councillors, who obviously see the Libdem brand and Alex Cole-Hamilton as toxic, not a single mention of their party.

Not hard to find even more evidence of two parents being better than one.  It's everywhere.

I wonder how the pseudo-academics of P&B will manage to rubbish the findings of actual academic, the late Sara McLanahan.  Far-right?  Racist?  Homophobic?  Maybe she'll even be labelled a Tory Brexiteering Yoon?

Or maybe, just maybe, it'll be that her data was collected in America :D

The fact that she was a single mother herself won't matter a jot.

Prof Emla Fitzsimmons is at it too.

Must be a bigot.

Do the authors of these papers deal with the question of whether single parenthood causes or exacerbates problems or whether it' s just a correlation?

The American lists a whole number of covariables, like alcoholism, age, criminality that are more prevalent in unmarried couples and says that there's little evidence that Bush's marriage programs worked. She also recommends higher benefits for single parents. I assume you're on board with that?

The British woman has a load of studies published, so i don't know where to start. But that quote just says that income doesn't fully account for difference in outcomes. If you could link to her specific study that would be great.

Don't know mate, but I'm happy to take them at their word.

That's nice.

But you seem to be suggesting that their research supports a political party's stated policy of encouraging marriage.

It's not obvious that it does.

Thanks for the tacit but clear admission that you don't understand what you're talking about.

Another panelbase poll in the Sunday Time showing that the Tories will slip to 3rd in the local elections. I wonder how bad it would have to get for the Tories to get worried and dump BoJo.

He's gone before the next election.

They'll want the next one to have not been in long enough to take the blame for the government's record. Probably after next year's local elections.

Of course it does, and it is indeed obvious.

Thank me for something that never took place all you want if it makes you feel better.

Strangely, I don’t think they’ll dump Boris.

Give it another year, and all this partygate stuff will be history. I also reckon they will start cutting taxes which will help make the conservatives look more ‘conservative’.

Even now, Starmer is starting to get some flak for his own beergating.which helps to deflect attention away from Boris.

On top of that, despite everything, Boris comes over as a likeable rascal with floppy haired kids from a multitude of wives. All in all, compared to some of the other leaders, he’s still an attractive proposition.

I know this will have the Nats and lefties  frothing at the mouth but it’s just my opinion.

Massive misjudgement from DPB. I'd guess most people would agree that the Tories will try to brazen it out with their current leader, that they'll (yet again) attempt a wee short-term financial bribe to remain in power, and that the entire cabinet come across as mendacious psychopaths, even in comparison to Floppy the PM.

Must try harder to contrarian better. I recommend claiming you believe that Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister, with a side claim that he'll impose widespread socialism for extra laughs.

Only now has my brain clocked that the schools being closed on Thursday is because of this.

Do they still use schools in some areas. Pretty much stopped that and moved to sports halls and community centres here a few years back. It's nowhere near as close as the school was but it stops schools having to close at every election.

In renfrewshire they were moving away from using schools......but covid.........

Are the Lib Dems the only ones who actually ‘get’ that local elections should be about local issues?

I suppose the people standing must know what they are doing. Maybe the parties they represent have realised that the majority of the electorate aren’t that engaged and will usually just vote for the party they usually vote for.

Not sure about that, we have ACH saying he would give councils more extra powers - that surely needs MSPs to make those kinds of changes?
