2022 Scottish Local Elections 5th May ** Official Match Thread**

Recommended Posts

There’s going to be a lot of pissed off ex-Tory Councillors who will hopefully be very vocal in their disdain for Johnson and the linesman.  Also those who retain their seats but lose control on their Councils.

Are Scottish Labour staunchly pro-Union?

Edit - It's not a good day for the Union if they aren't.  (I know it's a council election before anyone starts, but it gives an indication).

They are at the moment, but when the knives inevitably come for Sarwar, then the obvious candidate for leader would be Monica Lennon (should London let her run and not threaten her with deselection) and she's said it would be 'foolish and undemocratic' not to have IndyRef 2.

Edinburgh seems to like the Lib Dems.

You wonder if they'd have been less shy about letting their Tory impulses hang out if they hadn't send the fucking child catcher cunto to their patch yesterday.

I don't think "power" is the right word, % of votes is what would swing it, not just SF & the SDLP but the other parties which designate as "nationalist".

Alliance complicates things as they are "other", so how would their % of votes be allocated?

I would think the % of nationalist voters would need to be pushing 50%, as the (UK) government only calls a unification referendum if they think it has a chance of winning.

The RoI, if serious about reunification, needs to get its arse in gear and publish proposals for this "new, agreed Ireland", including fleg, anthem, etc not to mention important things like health service (no NHS down south), police, civil service, infrastructure (the A5 dual carriageway hasn't been done yet and the RoI reneged on the money they promised for it), education etc. Even the colour of road signs and their wording, e,g, "Yield" not "Give Way". (Some of these issues are fairly trivial compared to others.)

Those are just areas off the top of my head, no doubt better informed posters could come up with more.

One of the fun things about the GFA is there is no definition as to how the Secretary of State assesses the likelihood of the majority supporting reunification.

Could be opinion polls (what opinion polls? By whom? Over how long a period) or tea leaves.

The only ones pushing this in Dublin are Sinn Féin. Vradkar says he believes in reunification with "his head and his heart" but will do nothing to address the issues you mention.

As well as the practical there is the cultural and emotional. How do you protect and celebrate loyalist/protestant/ulster Scots culture in a united Ireland? It would seem to need some sort of commission to engage with it well in advance but what unionists would be part of it?

Bbc were in full on attack mode towards Ian Blackford when it was sitting at -4 for the SNP.

Ian Blackford kept trying to say it was early days but this wasn't an acceptable answer.

Scores on the doors:

There has to be an irish border poll. Vradkar will step into line if there is an opportunity.

And that scapegoat doesn't exist for DRoss anymore so expect a double down endorsement of Bozo and several reminders that we are "at war" !

It's as you were with SNP/LAB/CON in my ward but must've been some amount of transfers to the second SNP candidate as the Tory was only elected at stage 9!

Alba with 76 votes, and the Family Party on 40.

Didnae realise that their name derives from the fact that all their votes appear to come from one family, total.

Why does there have to be? Seats at an assembly election is not a trigger for a border poll.

Vradkar might fall into line in the event of a poll but the point is a lot of this stuff needs planned well in advance of a poll.

I'm in Newtonards today staying with friends. They aren't loyalists but they aren't Irish (their words). They won't vote to unite with the Republic of Ireland as is and start paying for doctors appointments and joining the but they might vote for something different to what they have just now.

Anyways there's a whole thread for this chat.
