Russian invasion of Ukraine

A literal neo Nazi is being appointed as the leader of the claimed territories.

Given Russia does not actually control large parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts its going to be an awkward start.

The reasoning here is so broken I cannot make sense of it. Crimea is given the same status as Zaporizhzhia where the capital city and most of the population is firmly in Ukrainian control.

Quick and brutal response to the attacks on Odessa if true.

Unconfirmed reports suggest Ukrainian forces may have destroyed a Russian drone control and training center that directed drone attacks against Ukraine, possibly killing Iranian trainers. Ukrainian journalist Andriiy Tsapienko claimed that Ukrainian forces avenged Russian drone attacks on Odesa by striking the Russian facility in Chulakivka on the Kinburn Spit of Kherson Oblast on September 26 and claimed that the Ukrainian strikes killed four dozen Russians and two dozen Iranian trainers teaching Russian forces how to use Iranian-made drones like the Shahed-136.[24] Russian forces have used Iranian-made Shahed-136 munitions to strike targets in Odesa in recent days, as ISW has previously reported. ISW cannot independently confirm Tsapienko’s reporting, and Ukrainian government sources did not report an attack on a drone command center. Ukraine’s Southern Operations Command reported on September 26 that Ukrainian forces conducted a strike on at least one ammunition warehouse in the Kinburn Spit but did not mention a drone center.[25] Ukraine’s Odesa Military Administration Spokesperson Serhiy Bratchuk also confirmed on September 26 that Ukrainian forces attacked unspecified targets in the Kinburn Spit.[26] The spit is the westernmost land the Russians still control in the Black Sea within 4 km of Ukrainian-controlled Ochakiv at its closest point, making it an excellent location for a drone command center from which Russia could direct attacks deep into unoccupied Ukraine.

That's just jumping to a set of conclusions. Civilians (many of which are reservists) are being enlisted across Russia: if they're ill-trained and ill-equipped to fight, then all of them are.

If ethnically Tatar battalions are being force-marched to the line without any equipment to act as human shields for ethnic Russian forces, then that would absolutely be a legitimate crime of genocide. But the 'reports' do not substantiate anything close to that.

"Tantamount" is a weasel word that has no place juxtaposed to genocide. That has a pretty clear definition and the more that spin doctors in Kiev or indeed Beijing, Moscow or Washington use that term to cry wolf, then more historic acts of genocide will be forgotten and more new ones perpetrated.

It's a risible propaganda line.

"tantamount to" strictly speaking should mean "amounts to as much as"

But if you think the word "Genocide" is used a little too loosely it's got nothing on "tantamount"

Try typing that word into google news and see that comes up
https://www.google.com/search?q=tantamount&tbm=nws

Your precise results will differ but generally you can replace "Tantamount to" with "not" in the sentence and it's improved, or at least not made worse.

It's fallen into such disrepute that your description of it as "a weasel word " is tantamount to a hate crime against the weasel community

Spamming Youtube links in a forum for text comments is the stuff of p***ks but as a proud p***k, I'll do that right now. Regarding the wee tangent into genocide definition in this thread, I listened to this a while back on the topic and found it informative.

That's coming from pro-Russian sources:

What complicates things for the Russians now is how a series of small dams on the Zherbets river severely limits the number of viable supply lines to Lyman:

further north the Ukrainians are reported to have liberated Borova close to a bridge over the Oskil river that may or may not still be useable to some extent:

Reports from the Swedish geological survey are off an explosion in the area of the damaged pipelines. HI Sutton, sort of the expert on covert submarines, has a thread on it. No conclusions but hints divers or autonomous subs

Raises interesting questions about this interview with Joe Biden:

Not convinced by the spin in this tweet personally (from a Syrian who is very pro-Assad and Russia) but would it be in the long term interests of the Russians to do this? Not convinced on that either. Ukrainians with scuba gear and explosives? The truth is out there...

In 1870, Molke the Elder, was able to issue a mobilisation order that had to go across multiple different kingdoms and pull in nearly 1 million men, equip them and have then on. trains going towards France in the matter of a week or two. Russia in 2022 does not have lists of the men who finished service in the past couple of years thus would be the old Category A reservists. Instead they are dragnetting anyone off the streets they can. Its more like something from the 18th century. The level of disfunction in Russia is mindblowing.

The assumption an action by one part of the Russian state was planned and war-gammed centrally by the General Staff and executed as part of a coherent war plan is a massive leap of faith. Its just as possible this was directed from the centre as it is that this is some kind of ultra nationalists in the GRU trying to kick off trouble with NATO or someone totally screwing up and carrying out the wrong war plan.

How fucking stupid are these people.

They lost the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet to a country without a functioning navy. They lost much of the heavy equipment of the First Guards Tank Army to a probing attack by about 5 brigades worth of motor rifle units.  The worlds second largest airforce has lost air superiority to a nation that may have less than 20 functioning fast jets, if your include Su-25s as fast jets.

They are telling their new cannon fodder to ask their girlfriends for tampons as tampons make for good bandages for bullet wounds.

"How fucking stupid are these people. " Unfuckingbelievably stupid.
