Unless there was a deal for them to put their arms down and retreat unmolested, I think the normal thing in war is to keep attacking a retreating enemy so they don't just regroup and attack again. The horrors of the Road to Basra come to mind. The earlier Russian actions in this war make it very difficult to see the Ukrainians exercising restraint unless the Russians are actually surrendering. They have, so far, done a good job of getting prisoners into safety and using them for propaganda purposes to encourage more to surrender. That's the reality of the situation unfortunately, although it doesn't make it any easier on the poor b*****ds who got blasted into chuck beef. Sounds like they left it too late to retreat in an orderly manner and were left with one road out which turned into a shooting gallery. Not sure there's a "wrong" in it really.... Retreating in the context really just means moving a fighting force from one position to a better position. Not sure if you can believe this, similar stories came out about areas after the Khakirv offensive.
