Russian invasion of Ukraine

"Shaping operations" may have simply hit such a thin crust they have pushed through rather than this all being some big planned multifront assault.

That is to say smaller operations designed to push back the front to begin the process of making it easier for a major operation to jump off (a shaping operation) simple over ran lines of resistance.

Seems too good to be true but quite a few tweets like this are popping up at the moment:

guess this was so far behind the frontline until a couple of days ago that the Russians would not have prepared strong defences but this town is so strategic it's hard to believe the Ukrainians can just drive in.

It seems like the Russians hadn’t prepared a huge amount of defence in depth in Kharkiv Oblast. In Kherson it appears they have dig out deeper defensive lines and fortified their positions.

Some reports of Russian counter strikes/attacks in Kherson today, potentially trying to roll back the more limited advances by Ukrainian forces in that area. One to watch.

Perhaps trying to secure routes for an orderly pullback of all remaining forces across the river? With the bridge and ferry issues, the Russians would be truly insane to try to hold the far bank in the face of determined Ukrainian attacks.
