Russian invasion of Ukraine

It is btw *peak* P and B for someone who witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall not as a border guard, or a member of the Politburo, or an ordinary German citizen, but rather 'watching footage' thousands of miles away on their fat arse to describe themselves as an eyewitness to history Whose Insights Must Be Validated.

On behalf of the oral history community: don't call us, we'll call you instead.

Unlike you I actually have a specialism in the subject of migration from eastern Europe, and can therefore place 1989 in the context of the New Immigration to the USA and the new, New Immigration in our neoliberal moment too.

If you want to start doing the same by actually reading a book setting out that context, then try Tara Zahra's truly excellent The Great Departure...

You seem to have a specialism in absolutely everything, from trains to epidemiology and now to Eastern European migration.

Is there anything you are not an expert in?

Watching a wee clip on the 10 o'clock news 30+ years ago = first hand account of the events and all context around them

You seem to be confusing 'specialism' with 'applying critical thinking at an advanced level'. A skill that can indeed be used to expose obvious logical flaws in experts' arguments across just about any discipline.

It's probably for the best that you've accepted a stupid wee pigeonhole instead.

Yes, and I have a specialism for spotting someone who is getting their information second hand rather than having lived through it.

There's a cracking scene in Good Will Hunting where Robin William's character sits Will down on a bench and takes his fake expertise apart. You should watch it.

Did Mary Beard live through the Roman Empire? If not, then what qualifies her to write about it? Is her expertise 'fake'?

Be extremely specific in defending your stack of nonsense argument please.

Never really understood what makes someone decide to become a collaborator, as seen a few times in this thread it doesnt generally end well, is the short term power trip really worth the risk?

They can be blackmailed into it - "Help us or your family gets it" type inducements. And it also depends on your definition of collaboration, I would imagine the likes of the civil service are just taken over by the occupying power and told to get on with things.

A holiday in Kazakhstan sounds intriguing though. What are the tourist attractions there?

I've been a couple of times on holiday. There are lots of stunningly beautiful areas near the Chinese border, Shymkent is a lovely city, plenty going on in Almaty, Lake Balkhash has a certain je ne sais quois.

I didn't realise Kazakhstan was so close to France.

It used to have a large German population (nearly 2 million).  It was where Stalin sent the Volga Germans when the Nazis attacked.  The numbers are much lower now.

Some early analysis of the counter offensive/attacks are that Ukraine aren’t necessarily trying to storm Kherson directly but improve their positions to force Russia to abandon the area.

Think the Russians were claimed to be down to one operational pontoon ferry for resupply across the Dniepr by last night.

No idea how true that is but that angle is no doubt just as important as what happens on the frontline. HIMARS attacks on four key bridges across the Dniepr and Inhulets have made it very difficult for the Russians to resupply their forces on the far side of the river.

Vlad is unlikely to let go easily though because Crimea's water supply is on the line at Nova Kakhovka along with any hope of a land bridge to Transnistria.

It seems like the Ukraine offensive was a disaster in terms of casualties...

War is inherently a disaster in terms of casualties. Whichever side is losing ground will talk that angle up. What's significant is that after 6 months there is still a Ukrainian state capable of launching an offensive against what was supposed to be the number two military superpower. Not many people were predicting that back on Feb 24th.

There are plenty on here more in the know than me, but surely China would have been #2, no?

In terms of being able to destroy the planet with nukes Russia is still in the top 2, if they haven't rusted away.
