Russian invasion of Ukraine

A couple of threads about the rationale behind the grain deal - one theory that it came following pressure from countries closer to Russia.

Also that the military defeat at Snake Island and sinking of the Moskva has degraded Russian ability to maintain the blockade.

China especially have a lot of cash invested in countries with food instability it wouldn't be great news for their investment if the populations started starving. Especially when domestically their growth is very poor indeed, although that's mainly down to Zero Covid and a housing crash

Explosions have rocked a key Ukrainian port just a day after Kyiv and Moscow reached a landmark deal to allow the resumption of grain exports.

Two missiles hit the port city of Odesa in the early hours of Saturday morning, Ukraine's military said.

Under the terms of Friday's deal, Russia agreed not to target ports while grain shipments are in transit.

Russia get to export grain and fertiliser via the Black Sea as part of the deal as well.

So this "deal" means they get their exports out but they still stop Ukraine.

The UK has now placed an additional 35% tariff on imported Russian fish as part of the latest round of sanctions. I suspect were it not for the current problems with prices going mental that this probably would've happened sooner.

Nevertheless, 50% of the world's white fish is from Russia. I am not sure what the percentage of Russian origin white fish sold in the UK is, but neverthless this is not something that can just be sourced from elsewhere.

Bloomberg reports, food exports from occupied Crimea have increased 50-fold since the war began. Already this year, at least 462,000 tons of food have been shipped from the port of Sevastopol versus just 8,000 tons the year before.

I wonder where the thieving Russian b*****ds got all that grain?

On Monday, the Russian state-owned Gazprom announced it would further halve gas deliveries to Europe via Nord Stream 1 from Wednesday, to 20% of the pipeline’s capacity.

The company cited equipment repairs to a previously unnamed turbine, a reason that the German energy minister, Robert Habeck, described as a made-up pretext and a “farcical story” on Monday night.

“Putin is playing a perfidious game,” Habeck told the news agency dpa. “He is trying to weaken the great support for Ukraine and drive a wedge into our society. To do this, he stirs up uncertainty and drives up prices. We are countering this with unity and concentrated action.”

As opposed of course to unilateral Western and EU sanctions, which are entirely different to this perfidious Russian game for... reasons.

Can someone, any actual adult please raise their hand to take over at least one European government please. Because this 'it's not fair!' squealing when consequences inevitably follow dumb actions will have Bismarck spinning out of his grave like a Catherine wheel soon enough.

Reports overnight say that the Antonovsky Bridge in Kherson has been hit again with artillery, likely HIMARS and is now closed, damaged beyond immediate repair.

The bridge crosses the Dnipier River and is a vital supply route for Russian forces in Kherson city.

No visual confirmation yet but Reports from both Ukrainian and Russian sources.
