Is it not the Chechens that are doing the donkey work in Mauripol? Maybe he's looking for them to clear it. No major casualties for Russia and a nice pat on the head and good propoganda for Kadyrov.

Nah, the Chechens are too busy thieving, raping kids and making Tik Tok videos

All the propaganda I'm taking in is that the Chechens on the Russian side are far too busy filming to be anywhere near the front line. However there's supposed be quite a few Chechens on the Ukrainian side too understandably, the Russians destroyed their country and handed it over to an utter psycho, they might be in Mariupol.

P.S. Nobody's going to be nuking anyone ffs. (general point, not part of this reply)

People need to get a grip on this tactical nuke stuff. The prevailing wind direction would take any resulting fallout over Rostov and a large portion of Russia's most fertile farmland. It would also be a while before any fish consumption from the Sea of Azov would be a good move. Odds on Vlad will give that a miss.

This is taken from the ISW assessments that have generally been good. The blue in the top is the counter attack around Kharkiv. This seems to have started with the limited goal of pushing artillery beyond Kharkiv. But its now pushing the whole region back to the point its turning the adjacent region, the push out from Izyum into a salient. Their main lines of communication are starting to get close to Ukrainian artillery range. This will severely test Russia's ability to sustain offensive operations with its constrained manpower.

Western artillery is now starting to arrive though the numbers are vague. A gun like the M777 has a range of up to 38km, while the standard Russian gun, D30, (and the one the Ukrainians have been using) can only get about 13km with inaccurate rocket assistance. There has been video claiming to show the use of western "precision guided artillery" (claimed video here) so its either Copperhead (laser guided) or Excalibur (GPS guided). We will likely start hearing a lot about the latter in the coming weeks. Its insanely accurate, 4m at around 40km range. America is sending about 200 000  rounds (99% will be old style dumb rounds) but these are going to be air bursting not ground bursting so much more lethal for troops, even in trenches.

To put western aid here into some perspective the numbers (from memory so always happy to be corrected) as that the Russians have about 4-6000 tubes, Ukraine about 1-2000 and the US and other sending about 120. I am sure there are those who will dispute the efficacy of such a small amount of support. I doubt those under direct fire will be among them.

Its not going to "change the war" in one week. But it will up the attrition rate. My guess is especially among Russian artillery units. Russia's current strategy is headed to collapse.

Why is everyone translating Zmiinyi/Snake Island but not any other toponyms?

Because it sounds like the lair of an evil genius in a children's cartoon.
