Reports are that Gerasimov was wounded with shrapnel. this is allegedly a video of the strike, it was on a command post near Izyum, a city the Russians took a few weeks back after a month of heavy fighting.

Why would the Russians hold a meeting involving their chief-of-staff and up to 100 officers leading their big offensive within artilley range of the Ukrainians near Izium when they know the Ukrainians have just been supplied with modern howitzers and guided munitions? If this stuff doing the rounds on twitter is accurate the level of stupidity on their part is breath taking.

My earlier posts were mixed up. There has been a fire in Belgorod, reportedly at a military depot. The fire occurred almost immediately after a number of high ranking Russian officials were present in the town - witnesses stating that the Chief of the general staff Gerasimov left on a helicopter.

It has since been reported that Gerasimov was wounded in the Izyum strike above.

As @LongTimeLurker says, it seems absolutely insane to do this and there probably are inaccuracies in the reports but there have been some completely bizarre things done by the Russian army in this conflict. The fact that someone so senior was involved like that does suggest that the Russians have issues with the chain of command.

Probably more of a PTTGOMN but the military experts on Radio Scotland etc all come across as insufferable pompous wankers.

And that's my take on the the subject.

Still hope Ukraine win on aggregate.

No Kenneth, he too is an arsehole.

In September 2014, Pilger wrote critically of The Guardian and other western media, regarding their reporting on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, writing "Without a single piece of evidence, the US and its NATO allies and their media machines blamed ethnic Russian 'separatists' in Ukraine and implied that Moscow was ultimately responsible". He asserted that "the newspaper has made no serious attempt to examine who shot the aeroplane down and why"

So am I wrong in believing Pilger is a credible source?

What about his work on Cambodia? Etc etc etc.

What is the main difference between that and now? it already feels like a "proper " war as it is

It would be more about bringing in his Air Power, currently the “Special Operation” is predominantly land forces, Putin has kept his Air Force mainly out of it as he’s selling it as “not a war”. He like most thought his Army could get this done quickly with a bit of support from his Naval forces and minimal air cover. However Turkey refused entry to the Black Sea for Russian military ships to supplement their Black Sea Fleet and his Army have proven themselves to be an absolute ragtag bunch who are clearly not the second best Army in the world and are actually the second best Army in Ukraine.

If and it’s a big if he chose to go full war on Ukraine and bring in his full Air Force it would make things very difficult for Ukrainian ground forces, simple NATO equipment has been extremely effective on the ground with minimal training (couple of lads with an NLAW can easily be trained to take out a tank with Russias poor tactical awareness) matching Russian Air power to prevent them having Air Supremacy is harder. Ukraine would need not only the equipment (fighters and SAMs) they’d also need the training to use it effectively which takes time.  If Russia had full Air Supremacy the battle on the ground would soon turn in their favour they’d also have the ability to bomb cities back to the Stone Age with their heavy bombers which they’ve shown with Mariupol they’ve no moral problem doing.

it all really depends how much Putin wants to win here or if he’ll try to claim a hollow victory after securing parts of East and South Ukraine and get his troops out of there.  Overall it’s been an absolute disastrous campaign which rather than putting NATO on warning has done the opposite and shown that in a conventional war NATO would beat Russia easily. I’ve no idea how Russia gets out of this without serious damage to their reputation, economy and world standing especially while Putin remains let’s hope they do.

Yes.

Here you can read about the nazi horsehit so favoured by the Kremlin that he bought and spread without ever stopping to check if it was bollocks.

I couldn't give the slightest monkeys toss what he wrote about Cambodia.

Great time to be doing your year's national service if you're a Russian :) I imagine though that the vast majority of the extra forces that would generate would only be trained to a fairly basic level, and that there wouldn't be much if any investment in more advanced and technical skills if they've only got them for a year.

More than likely that the conscripts they throw in would mainly be a cohort of infantrymen at a basic level of skill whose main contribution to a modern technical battlefield would be their quick ability to convert themselves into 12 stone of airborne mince.

exactly, if he can't win with his best men out what chance is there of winning with a bunch of kids straight out of school with 12 weeks training
