On the one hand he committed to cutting the number of MBTs, on the other he also committed to a massive upgrade to the remaining fleet - they are basically going to be new tanks (new gun, new optics, new armour in a whole new turret and a new powerpack) I get the impression that the British Army knows better, well enough but it had other priorities it needed to take care of in the short term - and in fairness a lot of those priorities are being borne out by what we are seeing (an emphasis on new artillery, more, longer ranged rocket and missile artillery... drones and persistent surveillance - a whole new comms network to provide better situational awareness) You still need tanks to provide mobility and to take ground.
