Going back a bit further, Hunter Devine scored a first half hat trick to put Queen's 4-1 up in a Division One match against Rangers at Hampden in April 1957, Queen's eventually losing 4-6.

Pre war would not have been considered a hattrick unless player scored 3 in a row

I got bored at this point so didn't do pre war but most games finished about 7-5 in those days.

You can remove the Dom Thomas entry on 23/02/19 as Dumbarton were the winners in that game.  On a separate note, Hughie Gallacher scored four for Dumbarton at Gayfield on 8 November 1958 in a 5-4 defeat. Incidentally, Dave Easson scored all five of Arbroath's goals as well.

This brings back one of my earliest memories of seeing football on television. It was Hearts v Celtic on Sportscene or Scotsport with Willie Gibson scoring 3 in vain as Hearts lost 3-4 at Tynecastle. 

Just looked it up on line and it was 1976. I would just have turned 5 so not overly familiar with players of that era but I've a remembered the name ever since.

To score one hat trick and not win could be considered unfortunate, to score 3 is carelessness...

So although it's not THAT rare, the instance in the post at the start, the 4-4 game with St. Mirren and Falkirk, that must be exceptionally rare that two players get a hat-trick in the same match and neither of them win.
