People's opinions of the split (..and possible reconstruction?)

Recommended Posts

That is f**king horrendous that it's possible to play the same fixture 10 times in a season.

End this shit show now. It's like the powers that be are trying to kill the game they run but we are all too stupid and stubborn to throw the towel in.

It needs to stop. Bigger leagues need to happen.

Just wanted to give you a greenie for a well thought out and structured reply, obviously quite some time and effort was put into that comment.

I don't necessarily agree with all of it, but it's a world away from kneejerk speculation and trotting out unsupported hyperbole.

Now, talking about kneejerk speculation and unsupported hyperbole....

A 16 or 18 team league would destroy the character of scottish football.

...well done, that is complete and utter mince.

The clubs are "the powers that be".

@Dunning1874suggestion makes a lot of sense, unfortunately there isn't  that much around. The first hurdle I see is introducing 6 more clubs, despite the benefits he described.

I can think of a couple of scenarios.

The clubs will object to sponsorship money being diluted.

Big club's will want the 6 to include reserves.

Yeah, that's the big concern with it. When you look at the sums Premiership clubs get then you could increase prize money being given out to the second tier so there'd not be the big gap with 10th & 11th (current first in League One) you currently have, and you also need the prize money for the six new clubs at the bottom.

You could probably cover those issues by diverting between 1.5-2% of the current prize money split down the way. You could take it away from the top two clubs alone and you'd be taking away an entirely inconsequential sum of money from their perspective. Giving the title winner 12.4% rather than 13.4% would reduce it from £3.35M to £3.1M, and second place from 9.6% to 9% would go from £2.4M to £2.25M. Small change to Celtic and Rangers but it would give an extra £400K to spread around clubs who wouldn't view that as insignificant at all.

Of course thanks to Stewart Milne this would need to pass an 11-1 vote of Premiership clubs and Rangers and Celtic probably wouldn't agree to that even if they got something in return. Even if they were willing to consider it the thing they'd be looking for would be B teams in the league which is an absolute red line. No B teams in the league under any circumstances, ever.

Have 3 leagues of 14. Play each other 3 times, 39 games. No silly split and cuts down on the playing each other 4 times. 2 up 2 down with playoffs for 3rd relegation spot.

Only downside is half the league will have 19 home games and 20 away. But they can switch this the following season so it evens itself out.

Which has been tried, caused arguments and was kicked in to touch by the clubs.

"Celtic at Ibrox twice, no chance!

But next season...

f**k next season!"

Which was tried twice before in tiers 2 & 3 and disliked.
