Mathematical Milestones 2022

Recommended Posts

It's Monday and that means Mathematical Milestones.

So (just to wind up Leith Green), Livi and Hibs both sealed their Premiership status due to St Johnstone losing to St Mirren.

In the Top Half, nothing happened in the past weekend but a few things can happen this week.

Celtic will be champions if they better 'Rangers' result.

Dundee Utd will secure a top 5 finish and European football if they beat 'Rangers' and Ross County beat Motherwell.

In the bottom half, a point will secure Livi a top 9 finish if Aberdeen and St Mirren both lose, a win will secure a top 8 finish if both Aberdeen and St Mirren fail to win.

A win for Hibs will secure a top 9 finish if Saints fail to win.

For Aberdeen and St Mirren to be safe, they need to win or hope that St Johnstone don't.

Anything other than a win for St Johnstone will condemn them to an 11th or 12th place finish although they can assure themselves of safety from the automatic drop by winning and Dundee failing to beat St Mirren.

Dundee have Mark McGhee as their manager so they are fucked.

Aberdeen and St Mirren both avoided automatic relegation on Saturday too.

I like, and concur, with the fact you’ve included this as a mathematical fact.

Whisper it but …

Aberdeen could still take 7th!

I

Stop it, you. You had me dreaming of 8th yesterday and I was thudded back down to earth with one swing of Paul mcginns boot.

Not again topcat, not again.

Dundee's victory over Hibs this evening means that they are still in with a chance of overhauling St Johnstone and taking 11th place although a point for the Perth Saints against Aberdeen would condemn the Dee's to the Championship.

St Mirren and Aberdeen secured their league status at the weekend.

A win for Livi over St Mirren will guarantee them 7th place where a draw will mean they can finish no lower than 8th.

If St Mirren win and Aberdeen don't, the Dons will finish 9th or 10th.

In the top half, if Dundee Utd better Ross County's result they will clinch a top 5 finish and European football, if Motherwell beat Hearts and County don't beat Rangers then Motherwell will secure a top 5 finish. Utd can secure 4th if they beat Celtic and Motherwell lose and County don't win.

Dundee still have Mark McGhee though and are thus, fucked.

Celtic are officially the Champions, 'Rangers' will take 2nd spot, Hearts 3rd, Motherwell and Dundee Utd have secured European football, Ross County will finish 6th.

In the bottom half, Dundee are officially relegated and St Johnstone will finish 11th and play in the Play-Off final, Livi's point last night means they can't finish lower than 8th.

Going to the final weekend, Motherwell must match or better Dundee Utd's result to clinch 4th, a draw will be enough for Utd if Motherwell lose, due to the Arabs' superior goal difference.

In the bottom 6, Livingston will clinch 7th place with a point against already relegated Dundee. A draw for St Mirren will mean they finish ahead of Aberdeen, although Hibs would overtake them for 8th with a victory against St Johnstone. A draw for Hibs will mean that they can finish no higher than 9th as a draw or win for St Mirren would see the Buddies remain ahead of them whereas an Aberdeen win would see the Dons overtake the Hibees. Should Hibs beat the Perth Saints, they will overtake St Mirren if they don't beat Aberdeen. The Dons need a victory to move up the table and would finish 8th with a win if Hibs don't beat St Johnstone and will finish 9th if they win and so do Hibs. A draw or defeat will see the Dons finish 10th.

It turns out that having Mark McGhee wasn't ultimately what did for Dundee, it was the fact that Aberdeen are absolutely muck.

When was the last time the title and relegation were decided on the same day?

In fact, almost everything meaningful was decided yesterday - title, Europe, play-off and relegation. Other than placings, all we're left with is Motherwell and Dundee Utd waiting to see who gets to skip a round in Europa Conference League qualifying.

Even though it's relatively minor, Sky should really have Ross County v Dundee Utd as a second game on Saturday. I think they're below their quota of RC home games.
