This story has been bobbing along for months.

There was an interview with some marketing dude from Greene King talking about this and he made two points, only one of which i think is relevant.

Firstly, they accept the name isn't racist due to its origins and the local story of the dog taking its master food. However "in these times" people might still get offended. Seemed contradictory.

Second was that they tried to add the pub to their social media accounts and the likes and it kept getting filtered out due to bad language. This, I think, is the real issue.

The real issue is having b*****d chains buying all the pubs

It is a cracking wee pub.

Story is true. Greene King want to change it from the Black Bitch to the Black Hound. Been petitions and protests about it but won't make a jot of a difference.

They can't even come up with a decent Scottish alternative

The black hound

Sounds like thought up by a uk pub chain board

like the black dug instead

On names, Pat Bonnar’s other nickname leaves me a bit baffled. Yes, it’s just a nickname to him but for people who have grown up getting abused with the “P” word it must be a bit troubling if they hear it being used.

Friend of mines, on a football trip down south watching Cardiff, had his drink spiked with viagra. At one point in the game, most of the away end was singing “There’s only one Packie Bonnar”, with half of them coming to point and laugh at him while singing. I don’t think any of them knew who Bonnar is/was, other than someone whose name rhymes with “stauner”.

How dare you disrespect 1D.

I wouldn't have thought any of their songs were wise to sing along to in public unless you have caught yourself in your fly.

Also history is not a patch on Story of My Life

Anyone who gets irked about something like this is only ever about 2 pints away from a full-on "you can't say anything nowadays without somebody getting all offended" frothing rant.

It doesn't matter anyway, nobody will ever call the pub by it's new name.

Surely the owner of the pub is at liberty to call it whatever the f**k they want?

Equally, the townsfolk of Linlithgow are at liberty to swerve it if they're really that bothered.

Seems like an excuse for Linlithgow to collectively say "look, we exist!" to the bemusement of everyone else.

Problem is landlord has been there for a few years and is a good guy. Any boycott hits him in the pocket and he is against the name change.

It isn’t really. Ayr have a song that has a line referring to Killie fans as ‘black b*****ds’, and whilst it’s nothing to do with race, it’s clearly still offensive to anyone outside of that very small section of the public who know the backstory and therefore is offensive sounding to most who would hear it and needs called out and binned.

Just because the basis isn’t intentionally racist, doesn’t mean it isn’t offensive.

It's going to be one of those pubs whose name isn't really it's name like the Diggers
