HibeeJibee Posted January 23, 2022 Share Posted January 23, 2022 After being cancelled last season and abandoned the season before that, the East of Scotland League Cup makes a welcome return this season, having been left until the spring in case of public health stoppages etc. Bo'ness United are incidentally the holders... having beaten Musselburgh in the last Final, at Penicuik way back in early May 2019... but themselves ascended from the EOSL the following campaign. Edition before that Lothian Thistle HV took the laurels - back when there were only 13 clubs in the entire league! Edinburgh South, Kennoway, Kirkcaldy, Lochgelly, Lochore, Luncarty, Newburgh, Rosyth, Thornton and all of Conference X accordingly make their debut; as do Dundonald (rather bizarrely). Glenrothes and Kinnoull made their bows in abandoned 2019-20 edition. Novelty fact... Arniston, Dalkeith, Edinburgh Utd, Inverkeithing, Newtongrange and Tweedmouth have also never won a tie. There will be 12 sections of 5 clubs each playing 2 home / 2 away games (but only 4 clubs in Section L). Games mainly in March. Section winners and best 4 runners-up from A-K qualify to Last 16, from whence straight knockout. Final due for weekend of Saturday 4th June. With football not having been stopped, most clubs are well up on their league schedules, so this will generate important additional games and revenue. Facing clubs from different divisions/conferences adds variety - e.g. Conference X clubs each meet 4 new opponents. Quartet of best runners-up places should help sustain interest if anybody "runs away" with a section. Clubs will be placed in 5 pots according to their division and conference position (on PPG) immediately following the matches on Saturday 12th February; with 1 club from each pot drawn into each section. It's the latter who drop into Pot II, on GDPG, so that is actually back as it was last month. Otherwise no movement - although Stirling Uni EOS came within 4 hundredths of a point-per-game of overhauling Edinburgh South. Oddly enough the PPG entirely matches the tables except for Dunbar being 'ahead' of Inverkeithing. Makes sense tbh... otherwise you could end-up with 2 of 4 clubs (50%) qualifying from Group L, and yet only 1 of 5 clubs (20%) qualifying from 8 other groups. You may be recalling the arrangements which operated in 2012-13 and 2018-19, but those were to discern a single "best third place" club to join the top 2 from every section. Furthermore the precise same method as this season also operated in 2018-19: back then there were 9 groups of 4 and 1 group of 3 but "best third place" could only come from Groups A-I: (Back in 2012-13 the sections were not 1 club 'short' but had 1 club 'too many'... 1 group of 6 and 4 groups of 5... so a single game - A3 v A6 - was ignored when calculating "best third place").
