I am getting nowhere Two days ago I realised that the common enough letter P hadn't been used in any recent answers, so I tried to think of a word containing that with two vowels (think I'd rather nail down consonants than vowels though, hence the 3 cons' vs 2 vowel thing). I put PULSE, which really narrowed down the options to get SLUMP. That was obviously pretty jammy though. Realised the same with C yesterday and so put down CURED, which started me off well enough. I've completely avoided the uncommon consonants so far (j, y, x etc). Of course, this might all be terrible advice that got lucky. PULSE would have been useless for CRANK come to think about it.
