Week 27 update

Two deaths this week. Up first is the other Frank Williams: Frank Williams obituary | Dad's Army | The Guardian

Quote

The actor Frank Williams, who has died aged 90, was best known as the Rev Timothy Farthing in Dad’s Army, one of the BBC’s most popular TV series. Although this mild-mannered vicar was a bit of a joke and a ditherer, Williams himself was a deeply religious man, an Anglican churchgoer.

Indeed, in his later years he served three terms (1985-2000) as a representative of the diocese of London in the General Synod, where he expressed opposition to the ordination of women – he left the vote, which went against him in 1992, in tears – but never left the church, and often spoke up for better treatment of gay people.

He joined Dad’s Army, which ran from 1968 to 1977 (and has rarely been off the screen since), at the start of the third series, in 1969, when the vicar’s church hall in Walmington-on-Sea was commandeered by the elderly platoon for drill and strategic planning. It was not an arrangement Farthing welcomed.

Williams died at 90 so he's worth 35 Base Points with a Deadly Duo bonus totalling 60 points for @The DA and @The Master.

Second death was... podcast host Deborah James: Dame Deborah James obituary | Bowel cancer | The Guardian

Quote

Born in London, to Heather, a preschool gymnastics coach who has her own Instagram account as @bowelgran, and Alistair James, Deborah studied economics at the University of Exeter.

In 2005, she met Sebastien Bowen, an investment banker, whom she married three years later, and they had two children, Hugo and Eloise. The couple separated in 2014, living in different homes, but reconciled in 2016 after counselling sessions during divorce proceedings brought them back together. Deborah received her cancer diagnosis a month later. “You might find, like I did, that cancer is the wake-up call to realising you have a pretty good thing going on,” she wrote in her Sun column.

Deborah began that column in June 2017, five months after starting her @bowelbabe blog and Instagram account. Before her cancer diagnosis, she worked as a deputy headteacher at the Salesian school, Chertsey, then at the Matthew Arnold school in Staines, and led national research into growth mindsets in schools, work that informed her 2018 book, F*** You Cancer: How to Face the Big C, Live Your Life and Still Be Yourself. The following year she was awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of East Anglia and the Royal Marsden School.

Between cancer treatments, she also ran charity marathons, organised charity balls, and took part in numerous fundraising challenges. She continued actively campaigning throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and made a podcast with her children, The Good Stuff, between May and August 2020, promoting positive thinking and ways to find happiness. In April 2021, she launched the annual #NoButts bowel cancer awareness campaign on Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show, Lorraine, which ran again in April 2022.

I will link to my thoughts on this one from a few weeks ago:

tl;dr - she counts now, but I'm going to revisit the specifics of this rule for 2023. I do genuinely think this is a grey area and really I think it's difficult to define "famous for being ill" as anyone who's famous for being ill is still famous somehow. Is she famous because she had cancer, or because she did a podcast about it?

James died at 40, so she's worth 85 Base Points to  @Indale Winton and @mathematics@Bishop Briggs gets a Vice-Captain bonus for 128 points and @Billy Jean King and @Moomintroll get a Captain bonus for 170 points.

Honestly though Miguel, my thoughts on the matter were recorded months ago. I f**ked up & am delighted to get any points at all, but in the interests of fairness & as one of the major beneficiaries, we should lose all Captain & VC bonus points accrued as a warning to any future cheeky b*****ds who read The S*n down here.
