Scotland v Ukraine

This will be step one, they'll want to look like they're trying to find a happy medium so they don't annoy the Russians or their allies, then they'll "reluctantly" kick them out roughly this time next week when the war is still ongoing and it's clear lots of countries will refuse to play them.

Wonder if they bottled it for “financial reasons”?…

Both Russia and Belarus should be kicked out of membership of both FIFA and UEFA now, no ifs, no buts.

The same should apply to all other sports, basically neither country should be allowed to enter any competition outside their own borders, be that football, athletics, tennis, ice hockey, basketball etc the whole caboodle.

We have a situation where the EU have finally announced a complete no fly zone or landing for any Russian aircraft across the whole of Europe, they have made moves to prevent their economy from trading quite rightly...for both countries to be allowed to compete in any international sport with all that going on, would be a farce.

So what happens if the other 3 nations stand their ground and refuse to play Russia in any location whatsoever, do Fifa bottle it and just hand Russia a place in the finals?

Yes

I'd think they would have no choice but to boot them out and replace them with the next best record in the group stages.

Could we get a scenario where Russia get a by to the finals and Ukraine get a by due to Scotland/Wales/Austria stepping aside.

Imagine the scenes if they ever get drawn against each other in the finals.

Why would Scotland/Wales/Austria want to step aside?

Already bunch of teams banned from coming up against each other

Armenia Azerbaijan for instance

Ukraine Russia will go on that list for all time suspect

In fact it's already on the list,  since 2014 unsurprisingly

Russia in the finals is unlikely to resolve anything. Few countries would be willing to play them in the finals which would be even more embarrassing for Theifa….

This is true for qualifying draws etc, i'm not sure how you manipulate it to happen in a finals should their routes cross

If you're talking years and decades down the line they'd no doubt eventually meet in a finals... East Germany v West Germany in 1974, Argentina v England in 1986, Iran v USA in 1998 were all "highly-charged encounters".

Almost feel like I’m supporting Ukraine now tbh.
Every neutral certainly will be.

And that’s just one reason why I’m not keen to play this game in three weeks time.
Beating Ukraine to qualify is going to feel like a hollow victory they way things are at the moment….
