Scotland v Ukraine

No-one is saying they're infallible. Just better than us They're capable of off days.

By the same token so are we (capable of off days). No argument that Ukraine beat us handsomely last night, but it's galling how little we actually brought to the tie.

It happens, we had a good run, but still more likely to have off days than some countries. That's what makes teams better or worse than each other.

Not every victory is an amazing panacea and not every defeat is an apocalypse.

I know less national games mean the above is often lost.

We have a good chance of qualifying from the Euros, contrary to the BBC report this is hardly a shock defeat, Ukraine are no mugs and have had a 6 week training camp together.

Disappointing result and performance, one to learn from and move on, not rip the whole book up. Talent wise this is still the best Scotland side this millennium (imo).

Yet again this proves that we don't have the mental capacity to win the on the big games.

The idea that there's something unique in the makeup of Scots that prevents us from delivering on the big stage is ridiculous tbh.

Ukraine are 'no mugs' because they're better than us, as their ranking, results and tournament progression in the last 20 years show.

Gordon’s decision making in terms of when/when not to charge out has always been a weird point to his game. Was a massive issue in Europe when he played for Celtic - where half decent strikers would just leave him in no man’s land.

Was surprised he didn't get a bit more stick for this last night - made up Yarmolenko's mind for him. (Appreciate he kept us in the game with his reaction saves, so hats off for that.)

Yip, if he stays in his goal, Yarmalenko has a Hell of a lot to do to score.

Honestly think everything surrounding this game affected our players and emboldened theirs. They didn't want sympathy, and I'd be surprised if they didn't feel a bit patronised by everyone falling over themselves to profess their mental ideas about how we should treat the game. They didn't need to be fired up but it clearly helped.

Then on our side we're putting up videos about kids dying in the war up during the warm up (before an immediate and odd tonal shift to Big Country) and have spent weeks suggesting we shouldn't even win. If that even affects the players 1% then it's gone too far.

EDIT: and just opened the bbc sport app that was still on the page from last night, and they've even managed to patronise them after they deservedly cuffed us. "astonishing given the circumstances". No, they were just fucking better.

We’ll always have Serbia away.

I don’t know why every defeat needs to turn into some kind of existential crisis tbh.

We were poor that’s it. It doesn't mean we have technically inferior players or that the Ukraine 11 would walk into our team (they are a much better team than they were being given credit for though) they wouldn’t.

I was thinking the game reminded me of West Ham v Frankfurt tie, a really good team that looked tired and burnt out a bit. My worry is whether we can pick it back up for Armenia but I hope the weeks rest will help a bit.

Aye.... Iv been in and out this thread today and never bothered posting, mostly becasue its all been said well enough already, but we do lurch towards sacking the manager each time a qualifying campaign ends in failure, even in the instance where it was objectively success to get to this point.

I hope Clarke learns a lot from this. I see no reason why he won't have. He built the feeling around this team, and its took a dunt for sure, but he can build it back. We just need to wise up a bit.

I think the chat about a defeat being existential is rightly called out as knee jerk, but also the lackluster performance for me is the biggest issue, losing last night was always possible, but creating so few chances and being outclassed is pathetic.

Such a poor way to end the campaign.

Its reverse exists too and it's probably even more absurd.

Take a look at some of the OTT nonsense on here in the wake of the Denmark game for evidence.
