WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS: the Scottish balls-up scenario. It couldn't happen, could it?!

Beat the minnows, take 4 points against our main rivals and let the top team beat everybody has been the blueprint for getting second place for the past couple of decades.

Unfortunately the two things that have put paid to that on the past have been embarrassing dropped points against the mighty Georgia/Lithuania/Kazakhstan/Belarus/Moldova and the top seeds slipping up against our rivals (Germany dropped points to Poland and ROI, for example)

Glad it played out this time.

It’s a prime example of why I always prefer to draw the best ranked team in pot 1 rather than someone who’s more likely to lose points to our direct rivals.

Strangely we DIDN’T drop a top team on paper this time but Denmark have clearly came on leaps and bounds since they only just sneaked into pot 1 (Euros SF’s despite the disruption of the Eriksen tragedy)

I agree with that to an extent, but for ply-offs the old seeding format was world ranking which would definitely have had us unseeded. This gives us a bit of a shot - so no complaints from me.

Our World Cup hopes really are all in the draw. It can be as harsh as Sweden and Croatia away back-to-back, or as kind as North Macedonia and Serbia at Hampden. There’s almost no chance in most scenarios, we’d maybe even be favourites in a couple. Still a tall order but for now it really is important for us to try and get that seeding on Monday night.

Why should it be a tall order? every other team in the play offs will have finished second in a seeded group, the same as us. yes some teams will have better odds of getting through but no one is unbeatable , no one is all that different to ourselves

it was the same from the media last year - " oh were just widdle nations league entrants how can we beat big scary Serbia away from home blah blah",  serbia ended up there as nations league C winners the same as us funnily enough

Enough of this fuckin stinking losers mentality of "oh it will be so hard" play the fuckin team not the jersey

The opposition will be higher quality this time, because to qualify for the Euros, we had to beat two of the best teams not to finish in the top two whereas here we have to beat two of the best teams not to win their group.

It's far from impossible to qualify but nothing wrong with stating that it's "a tall order". Qualification would be a much greater achievement than it was for Euro "2020".

Incidentally if this was a Euros campaign, we would already have qualified, which stands us in good stead for 2024.

Correct, but we are also higher quality since we managed to  finish second in our group, the same as any other team, we won 6 games drawn 2 and only lost against the top seed. were nae worse than anyone else

Norway currently drawing at home to Latvia

If it stays that way, does that help us at all?

Counting only matches against teams ranked first to fifth in the group

Latvia 5th

So does count

Turkey will be on 18 points after beating Gibraltar tonight.  They are away to Montenegro on Tuesday so a win will give them 21 points less 6 = 15 points.  Not sure how their goal difference looks once you take away results v Gibraltar but if they were to drop points on Tuesday (and Norway dont beat the Netherlands) then of course it would make our passage a little easier if we dont get anything v Denmark.

However it likely hands second place to Turkey who would be above us if we don’t meet Denmark so moot point really

Turkey would still need to beat Montenegro away to overtake us, which is hardly a guarantee given that they didn't beat them at home.
