Can you explain the phrase ‘pay freeze’.

Does that mean if you get £30k in year 1, then you get £30k in year2?

Having never worked in public services I can’t quite fathom out how things work.

Or, is there a mechanism that your pay automatically increases even with a pay freeze?

If your job has an incremental pay scale then the answer is yes.

It's only the C1s in our department who are getting a pay rise this year (barely over 1%). Everyone else is being told to (politely) f**k off.

Agreed "a tax cut for bankers taking short haul flights drinking champagne."

Starmer should have been responding to this, as he should have at PMQs.

Shouldn't the fact that both Milliband and Reeves almost certainly out-performed him, be telling Labour something?

eta... Should have mentioned that Starmer is apparently self isolating, again, and Angela Rayner is on bereavement leave.

Unfortunately what they think it is telling them will be that they need to hate immigrants more and shag brexit harder.

Well very little of note but good to see they've simplified the alcohol duties as they were completely illogical previously. Also good that they've cut air passenger duty but I'd rather it was uniform rather than just domestic flights. We already the highest air passenger taxation in the world by a significant distance.

Also feel for lumo who were trying to compete with the domestic air travel will now face an even harder sell on the ticket price. Cutting air passenger duty across the board like that is just weird when you're going into COP, would have made more sense to "level up" the islands and cut duty from Island airports into Great Britain.

Flights starting at those airports (and indeed Inverness) are already exempt. Not the case flying into them from any airports outside the Highlands/Islands though.

There's a new band for 'Ultra Long Haul' being introduced, presumably will be higher.

Seems a bit of a sop to airlines after various border measures made their industry a total misery for the last 20 months. I doubt the savings will be passed on.

Do you know if the same is true for say Isle of Man or Jersey their governments are obviously a fair bit more different again compared to the Scottish examples.

Sunak lining up a leadership bid here.

He's been signalling he's the 'real Tory' all the way through the pandemic and now he's signalling he's pro flying when Boris is being forced to talk about cutting emissions. The Good Cop getting ready for the next election two minutes after which he switches to Bad Cop.

Have we have seen on here during the pandemic access to affordable flights has a huge grip on the public psyche.

They are not exempt - only the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Not sure if the UK Govt has the authority to levy APD there, right enough.

Can't figure out what's happening to people who have no work income whatsoever. Some talk of tapering of the £20 cut in Universal Benefit, but what happens to people who are unemployed? 25% ish cut for the poorest sector in the country?

Looks like overall trade down but the UK now in surplus with the EU whereas we had a deficit at the point of the referendum.

As a trading nation the volume matters more than the balance. America isn't impoverished by paying for cheaply manufactured goods from China, just as Rome weren't by getting Egyptians to grow their grain.
