St Johnstone vs. Hearts

Performance for the ages for MacLean today.

Played on 3 times when players are down with head knocks. Gordon handles the ball outside the box and wipes out someone with an open goal in the same move and doesn't even get a free kick awarded against him, then he tops it off by allowing a Hearts player to juggle the ball in the build to their equaliser because it hits his knee first.

Sensational stuff.

Game feels chaotic enough for anything to happen. Love it.

Gordon did neither of those things.

You're not one of the saints commentators are you? dry your eyes and be happy with the point saints were lucky to get.

Got to make more of the amount of ball we have in every game, too many awful crosses and bas choices in the final third.

I thought we were the better team overall, but we defended like idiots at bad times so you run the risk of not winning.

Big Gnanduillet did much better tonight, the less said about Halkett and Halliday the better.

Pretty comfortable point in the end.

Hearts are similar to early McInnes Aberdeen. Can fight the fight and have a wee touch of class about them, but ultimately they'll always fall that bit short because they don't have the ability to find another level. Game was there for them if they wanted but they never really tested Clark in the second half. Devlin is a good battler but he was regularly receiving the ball in 30 yards of space in our half and creating nothing.

We're starting to get back to what we want. 2 defenders coming off at half time and us spending 45 mins with a rookie left back playing right wing back kind of sums up our luck this season. Meant we only had the 1 sub to make and our tempo had to drop so we could actually make the end. Happy to take that result as a base to build from tbh.

Referee was farcical. 6 free kicks against Devlin before he gets booked. The phantom corner, that somehow became a throw in 10 yards from the corner flag, a real highlight. It's just baffling how wrong they get things.

We were comfortable for 37 minutes until Steven McLean remembered it was St Johnstone he was refereeing against.  He fucks us every time.

From thereon it was all hearts. Not often we get something out of a game where we were the poorer side, but certainly the case today.  Spoony, Rooney and O'Halloran all out, 2 enforced changes at half time due to injuries, so overall got to be happy with a point. Hopefully the players get a lift.

Thought Davidson was immense, Gordon excellent as well, and Ambrose obviously been told to keep it simple, which he did well.

Feel we can only play one of Crawford or Macpherson in the same team; Crawford loves to drive forward, and Macpherson takes an excellent dead ball, but their defensive work is a big drop off from others we have in there.  They rarely win it back.

Our ability to keep the ball in that second half was dreadful, we gave possession up so easily everytime, but fair play to hearts for forcing mistakes.

Hearts big no 21 is a cracking player. But the rest of the squad are your typical hearts team full of very dislikeable cheating gobshites.  Good team though, and along with Utd definitely in the top four sides we've played in the league this season I would say.

The phantom corner was spectacular. McLean must have been the only person in the stadium who didn’t see that it clearly went out for a corner, it wasn’t even close to a throw. He is truly a dreadful referee.

The two forced subs at half time were a nightmare for us. Crawford and May were done after about an hour but it was difficult to know which one needed to go off at that point. Middleton coming on helped us an awful lot in that last 15, just to be able to press again.

Very interested to see the Hearts goal and Gordon/May incidents again.

Ok, that's enough draws now Hearts.

After a ropy first half we were well on top in the second but I still never felt we were going to score despite plenty of chances. The lack of goals from the front three is a fundamental problem which will ultimately mean we're nowhere near the top of the league when everything's done (which most of us never expected tbf). Gnanduillet was much better tonight but we need a big signing in that position if we want to be sure of third.

Halkett had an a bit of a nightmare, especially in the first half. I'm pretty sure every St Johnstone spell in our defensive third could be traced back to one of his terrible passes. He's done well this season and has enough credit not to be dropped but I wonder if Moore might eventually take his place.

Hearts continually played into our hands in that first half, playing it out from the back on such a heavy pitch invited the pressure which we were doing well, and might have been further ahead.

As mentioned, Steven McLean then went full Steven McLean and thereafter hearts dominated.

Tbh I think the half time subs fucked us. No chance we could keep the press up with only 1 sub left in the 2nd half.

As was said a few players were clearly breathing out their arse after an hour but we couldn't do anything about it until one of them was completely done. No pressing + fatigue led to Hearts dominating more than the ref, IMO.

Thought it was a really good game and we were just about worth a point. Our pressing for the first hour was very good, Kane and May worked their arses off and it was a shame about the half-time injuries. I like Crawford but thought he struggled physically later in the game and again our lack of available subs hurt us.

People shouting for Eetu to come on? On what basis? With one sub left Middleton was the only choice unless he was going to bolster the midfield.

Hearts are a good team, boy who scored the goal looked threatening all night although Zander didn’t have much to do 2nd half.

Always quite good fun to have a good scream at an inept ref. Not stopping the game for head knocks, a handball and clear foul on Crawford for the goal and the throw-in/corner decision being highlights.

After Livi and Celtic I was happy with the performance and result - a definite improvement.
