Yeah this. Whilst technically swearing at the ref is a red card offence most of them tend to tolerate it a bit in the heat of the moment. They will not and are told not to tolerate questioning their integrity though.

It's a long time ago now (1996 I think) but some will remember a famous game at Ibrox where Hearts had 4 players sent off. One sent off was Italian Pasquale Bruno. I remember attending a talk with one of the SFA referee supervisors a year or two later when he was said that Bruno had called basically verbally abused the referee to his face for a good half minute, calling him an "f....ing c..t", etc and not a reaction was had from the ref but eventually he called him a "f...king cheat" and was immediately sent off.

There's not a hope in hell that any appeal of a dissent red card has a chance of winning either. You need to provide some sort of audio footage evidence that says otherwise. I'm assuming that won't be available.

No referee should tolerate a player/club official either swearing at them or questioning their integrity. It is foul and abusive language for which a red card is the punishment.

I thought the ref had a great game today. And as a result, I had a great day.

And now I'm having a great night reading all the greeting on here.

Best feeling at the end of a game in ages. Love it.

This comment definitely won’t come back to haunt you. Not a chance.

McLean sent off for calling the ref a clown being reported on twitter.

Not a fucking clown. Just a clown.

Sometimes refereeing decisions really are so baffling that its understandable when frustration takes over.

Does anyone actually believe he said the word "clown"? Really?? If he did he deserves a red card for overt politeness on a football pitch. Next thing we'll hear is that Stevie Farrell got his red for shouting "bad show referee, you bounder".

Airdrie were far from great today and huffed and puffed for 80 minutes. We made life difficult at times and did not show the composure of previous matches. Too win any game in that manner is great and to also get the points in the bag when not playing well is how you win leagues. The referee tried to stamp his authority early on and the Dumbarton players/manager did not take heed. However salim did take heed which turned out to be the winner 😂 looking forward to next werk! Apparently the referee didn't hear the remark,  he heard it from the linesman who got told about it by somebody else...   Red card all day long....

Regardless of what MacLean said, a straight red for it is unbelievably overzealous.

I get the Airdrie fans trolling and basking in the win, but if that had been the other way round, they’d be baying for blood too.

Get your arguments - slight flaws:

It does matter what MacLean said - if what he said, within the rules, merited a red, then it is a red.

Our players were/are more disciplined - so the "other way round" didn't happen.

PS - whats this "trolling" shite - this is a forum.

That is the most bizarre match ever. Murray and prunts and the fat c**t in the Airdrie dugout should be ashamed of celebrating like that against basically a 7 aside team.

Foul on the keeper at the end and that ref should never be allowed near any pitch again.

May be an image of 1 person, standing and playing a sport

Thought we actually played well today. Ending in 8 men is a joke given how the red cards came about.

gegans was a joke, Buchanan’s you’ll see some give a second yellow some not, McLean’s is embarrassing if he’s said clown and been sent off for it

thought the ref was terrible for both really, we can be pleased with how we played. We’ll win more than we’ll lose if we play like that.

airdries trolling tonight is fair game. We’d be the same if it was us. All the bluster for the goals is fair too in the circumstances. Just happens it’s bitten us tonight but these things are like roundabouts so it’ll be Airdries turn to be on the end of it not too soon and everyone else will be happy and be able to point and laugh, it happens

Disappointing to see the result today especially considering we conceded so late after getting back into it so late too.

Iv not seen the game (will watch highlights later) but having a go at the ref is poor. Can disagree all we like about decisions but when it comes to dissent we don't know what was said. The ref would've laid the law down to the players pre match telling them what he will expect and where the line is. If our players are stupid enough to test that out then they are going to end up on the end of some cards. Can call the ref sensitive or whatever but if his integrity was questioned its a red all day. Swear at him, its a red. It's crystal clear in the laws of the game.

Instead of moaning about the ref, maybe we should moan about our shakey and leaky defence that shipped 4 goals! The ref didn't score them!!

That  was a disgrace. Referee lost the plot. Baffling decisions and bookings when players understandably ask what's going on. Never seen such a fucking inept performance from a referee.

A genuine disgrace. Fucking clowns.

Can I ask what exaclty was a disgrace? Did you hear exaclty what the players said when asking what was going on or are u guessing? For example if any of our players called him a fucking clown as u have then they will rightly of seen red.

Any ref dishing out a red for swearing is a sensitive wee flower and you fine well know it. You hear swearing every single week.

Yes there is swearing every week but There's a difference between swearing and swearing AT someone. Shouting "f**k sake ref" isn't likely to get you more than a talking too. "Your a fucking clown" on the other hand will see you heading for a bath.

What difference does it make. Our fans aren't exaclty showing ourselves In a good light here. Moaning and greeting because the referee did his job, reffed to the laws of the game, was consistent (which is a gripe every week) and we didn't like it.
