The battle for Ayrshire supremacy - Ayr United v Killie match thread

Yep, I thought he was poor. People get a bit misty-eyed about wingers at times if they get on the ball a bit and hug the touchline, but this often ignores the fact that they don't actually do very much. I thought we were on to a winner when he got Reading booked early on, but he did almost nothing after that. The idea of dropping Shaw or Hendry to accommodate both him AND his carbon copy on the other side Fraser Murray seems wild to me.

Don't think it's fair to say he did almost nothing after that - he took players on, got crosses and passes in to the box, hit the byline a couple of times and was just generally a nuisance to their fullback. It was the best performance by a winger in a while, which I realise isn't saying much. Funny how folk see games differently, spoke to a few folk after who were all raving about his performance. Thought he showed good strength for a small guy and had the beating of the LB. All of our good play in the second half came down the channels.

I think we have to drop Shaw or Hendry, based on last night. They're two of our best players, but Hendry did absolutely nothing being played out of position. As much as I think Fraser Murray has offered little so far, we'd be playing someone in their correct position by having him in the starting 11, and he's obviously come on last night and changed the game so it would be merited. Have to hope that gives him the confidence to perform. Burke would obviously be everyone's first pick ahead of him, but given he wasn't in the squad last night it seems likely there's something to the rumours of a fallout.

Shaw and Hendry have been a breath of fresh air since arriving, they're probably our two best players and their attitude is exactly what we need. Hendry's workrate was superb and he made loads of space for Waters to get up and down that channel. That's the sort of selfless performance you want from a player. Flaky players like Armstrong and Murray are fine, but you can only carry one of them as a team otherwise you end up with folk running over the top of you.

Armstrong is the very definition of a mercurial winger, for this level. It's a cliché, but it often felt like you could tell how he'd get on in game based on the first thing he did.

When his tail is up he's more than comfortable going either inside or outside his full back, and there are times when you'd struggle to tell which is his stronger foot. Equally, though, some games it just seems like his range is off and every time he tries to play a ball more than ten yards it veers wildly away from its intended target, and he really needs sat down, recalibrated and tried again the next Saturday.

I don't know that he'll ever really find true consistency, not at Championship level or above. If anything, I think you could clip his wings and he'd lose that spark that makes him so dangerous.

He's best utilised when he can go out and play, and the other players around him can get by even if he doesn't perform perfectly for 90 minutes. It's a big ask, and pretty much why he never got a look in at Ross County, but if you can afford it, he pays dividends more often than not.

Armstrong certainly got an absolute ton of decent crosses into the box, we actually defended them very well though.

Euan Murray continually brought the ball out from the back very effectively in the second half, and got the ball out wide into one on one situations - crazily we allowed him to do this for the entire half.

So both our team buses got bricked on the way out last night.....

People of South Kilmarnockshire... it's not big & it's not clever 😠

They’ll count that as two shots on target probably. Big Zach was however on hand to deal with them effortlessly, just like the previous 90 mins 😉

I'm assuming there is some inaccuracy in the article as there is no way the killie buses should have been anywhere near the "white city area" . If a police escort took them that way someone needs to have a word with them.

Pathetic behaviour though. Probably makes our buses a target on the 2nd now
