ok not Scottish football but on the England v Ivory Coast highlights, the interminable wait for a VAR decision is actually seen as part of the highlights.

Didn't watch it, or their other game, but heard they'd been awarded a penalty with VAR against Switzerland and wondered what was the point of having VAR in a friendly game? Was it so the officials could get some practice, or has it just become so much a part of their game that they feel the need to use it all the time now?

Not a clue. I found it a bit strange too.

VAR is shite, and I am completely against it. But if you're going to have it, then it seems you might as well use it in friendlies etc when the gear is readily available. Officials might as well take every chance to use it and go through the process.

Power of absolute shite, mind.

They have had it in England now for almost three years. How much practice do they need?

If it's just the stadium announcer that makes those announcements then ours is stood by the touchline with a clipboard. It'll be pish either way.

The VAR centre sends messages to the stadium and broadcasters which is how they appear on the big screens and how the commentators know a review is ongoing. It'll be something like "VAR check - goal" or "VAR review - no goal, offside/handball/foul".

Mind you, most people will be able to find out soon enough on their phones if they are still confused.

At most Scottish grounds that would sound something like "hmmfffmf hmmffmfff fffmmfff".

Sounds like improvements need to be made on the grounds of public safety as well then if the crowd can't hear the tannoy announcements. :P

It wasn't English officials, it was a Swedish UEFA cat 1 ref (doesn't have VAR in his domestic league) with two Belgian VARs (who do use it in their league), so very sensible to use it.

Why incur extra non-essential costs for a pointless friendly?

When a national team's manager uses a friendly to further implement his ideas to his team or blood new players into the system nobody bats an eyelid but when Fifa use a friendly to train inexperienced officials in the new technology it's an issue?

It’s not an issue, it was just pointless.

if you believe training people in the new technology that is available to aid them in doing their job is pointless then I fear for your employer. You don't seem to be a fan of VAR and the way it's been implemented. Surely proper training and experience with the technology would be a good thing...yet you question the validity of it

Where else is a Swedish ref going to get experience of using VAR if his domestic league doesn't use it? UEFA obviously needs to make sure it has enough officials with VAR experience for its competitions - I make it 27/32 UEFA Elite and 36/57 First Category refs who use VAR in their league, so without experience in friendlies a ref is going to be at a disadvantage compared to those.

The VARs probably operated from UEFA HQ in Nyon, so your costs are basically sending a couple of Belgians to Switzerland.

Incidentally Romania is introducing VAR next season (they have two refs in each category) while Scotland has 1 Elite and 3 First Category refs without that experience.

Willie Collum was referee at a Champions League or Europa League match last midweek which had VAR.

No idea about you, but I’ll agree to disagree.
