Did Paisley not try quite hard to be granted city status before, and (obviously) never got it?

I believe they lost out to Perth in 2012 for the last jubilee.

Losing out to Perth for anything should be automatic disqualification for trying again.

Dunfermline probably makes the most sense historically.

Larkhall is my banter submission.

Excuse me, Larkhall has two train stations, an Asda AND a Lidl. It's not all Flute bands and smashed traffic lights I'll have you know

Paisley is not a town for the same reason that Govan and Partick are not towns.

By that "reasoning" Scotland's not a country for the same reason that Yorkshire and Lancashire are not countries.

Only if you're a bit thick and don't understand the analogy at all tbh.

Paisley is part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation and so has no more claim to being a town than Partick or Govan, which were also distinct settlements gobbled up by the City of Glasgow in 1912.

Glasgow City's International Airport is further away from the city centre in the same direction than Paisley's shan 'piazza' and other 'tourist attractions'.

Not a city, not even a town anymore.

Paisley's only chance is trying to become the Salford of Scotland and I reckon the residents of Paisley would be as annoying as Salfordians in insisting they weren't just Glaswegians/ Mancunians.

Dumfries should have a good chance on the basis that they're the main town in a county which can't resist voting Tory every single chance it gets.

Simple question, does Paisley share a border with the City of Glasgow? Simple answer, yes, it does, just like the one between Scotland and England, in fact. Is it governed by the City of Glasgow? No, unlike Partick and Govan it has its own local government, Renfrewshire Council. You'll be familiar with Renfrewshire since the PO still class the arse of the bank as Renfrewshire, unfortunately for the civilised end of the County. Mind you, calling the greater Port Glasgow, Greenock & Gourock conurbation by its proper name, the arse of the bank, does kind of support your argument, I suppose.

If you're using the airport to underpin your "logic", you need to "think" a bit bigger:

By that demented "logic" Glasgow must stretch all the way down the M77 to Prestwick.

There is no 'border' between Glasgow and Paisley. It is a road with buildings on side and buildings on the other. They are one contiguous area, which is called 'Greater Glasgow'.

Paisley does not have 'its own' local government. It is kept in the much larger Renfrewshire Council catchment based on historical reasons that are now defunct. Just like Partick and Govan barely more than a century before it then.

Greater Greenock is indeed a very good comparison point, seeing as it does have its own local government and has not been swallowed up by any other settlement.

A viable town and candidate for city status then, as opposed to being Greater Glasgow's latest, Eastern European style ghetto.

Well no, because that's not Glasgow City's international airport at all. It's just a seasonal diddy hub for Ryanair to punt scheme goblins off to Spain every summer.

As opposed to Glasgow's international airport which welcomes visitors to Glasgow and kindly invites visitors to ignore Ferguslie Park and all its other shitehole surroundings by whisking them straight into the city centre instead.

Paisley: the new Easterhouse.

What a pile of steaming jobbiepish - is this what happens when your own "logic" classes you as English?
