Clash of the Dinosaur Mangers - Ayr United v Greenock Morton

Recommended Posts

Who would have thought earlier this month that this match would have all the shame game potential on the away end. But here we are now, with Gus 'slaphead' McPherson's insistence on fielding Robbie Muirhead every week and then insisting that he couldn't possibly ask for more from his squad. With a demonstrably improved squad and no upturn in results, the pressure and seethe is building.

Both managers as dinosaurs.

Duffy: An ornithomimus. Boring but long lasting, shows examples of minor changes in behaviour when required to evolve with those around them.

Gus: A stegosaur. Dull, dim witted and archaic even by dinosaur terms. A  brief, early, period of success before being easily overtaken by more adaptive competition.

Anyway, when the fixtures came out this looked an exciting one for the chance to give Hopkin a long overdue hounding. Instead he's slithered off before we get the chance and even the prospect of saying hello to that wage thieving charlatan McGinty again (after he was sent off on purpose v Arbroath already knowing he was signing for Ayr) is less appealing knowing that there's a distinct possibility a team with him in it will condemn us to a fifth defeat in a row.

MacPherson needs points now if he's going to last much longer. Saying we're not being outclassed other than the Partick game counts for nothing if you don't turn being competitive and staying in games into results, and if four defeats in a row turns into five, six, seven then MCT are going to be forced to admit handing him a two year deal was a reckless and costly mistake soon. If he wants to avoid getting to that point he can start by acknowledging one of his own reckless mistakes and get Robbie Muirhead out of the squad entirely.

For all of his agricultural reputation, Duffy came in and immediately sorted out a squad that had played 7-2-1 at home against Raith and been comfortably beaten within the same week, and even the goals that have been scored from hoofs up the park have been good.

It would be absolutely typical for the work thus far to be undone by the first team Ayr should be reasonably optimistic of beating of course.

In McGinty's defence that sending off was the one thing that ensured we made it through the play offs. Imagine how many Montrose would have put past us if he had started?

Morton fans talking about not getting the opportunity to go down there and finish Hopkin are deluding themselves: you just know we'd have been the diddies to cough up his first three points of the season...

The dynamic with Duffy is different, and maybe a bit less predictable. I think most of us (?) still have some affection for him, although that's probably more the case the older you are, feeding off his brilliant spell as a player for us; but not many of us think too much of his, eh, tactical flexibility, based on the last part of his spell as manager.

I think this is massive for MacPherson, tbh: if he gets bodied by a guy most Morton fans wanted rid of four years ago, it'll confirm what everybody knows: we've gone backwards. In that situation, the seethe will, as VT suggests in the OP, go into overdrive. I'll go as far as to say that if we get beat here, it will be the beginning of a pretty swift end for MacPherson.

Did Fjortoft play right back when he came on at Hamilton? Sounds like we played better when he came on so would maybe stick with the same 11 that started the second half v Hamilton. Would be happy to see Hewitt get a shot at it when he comes back, Houston been regressing for a while.
