Businesses no longer accepting cash

I think it’s a good thing. Businesses accepting cash should be optional for them but all businesses should be forced by law to accept card and contactless payments.

Considering Visa/MasterCard and the banks take a cut that would be legalized robbery.

Small businesses operating on limited margins, may struggle to remain solvent if they have to start dishing out a cut to card providers etc Also, a cashless society will also have a detrimental effect on the elderly, the poor and homeless. It’s basically Tory Britain and can be launched right in the bin.

What's your view of the banks that charge small traders for the privilege of paying hard cash into their business account? Is that somehow more acceptable?

Do all banks do that? Visa and MasterCard are basically a monopoly it would be a big step to legislate that businesses have to deal with them.

Central Bank Digital Currency will be here within a decade anyway so all the cash hating weirdos will get to see how bad an idea getting rid of cash is.

Paying banks for handling cash or paying card companies transaction and other charges is just a business expense like any other.  Ultimately it gets passed onto the customer.

Always carry cash. Find it bizarre that people are shocked when they stumble upon a business, that still uses a system whereby goods are exchanged for money. It’s only been the main method of global trade, for thousands of years.

Also, my favourite pub in Dumfries would laugh you out the door if you tried to pay by card.

My local only takes cash as well.

That was my point.

It was H_B that stated that credit/debit cards were "legalized robbery".

The banks will extract their 'pound of flesh' one way or another.

Any business pays for banking services as mentioned above, it is a part of business and how much comes down to how creative you can be to reduce it. The easiest solution is to pass it on to the customer in part or full.

Here (Singapore), is virtually cashless with various forms of contactless payment and it hasn’t had such an impact on the eldery/poor (cannot comment on homeless), although I am sure some will have problems.

Although the drive for being contactless as well as other smart/new technologies is driven as much by the government as the private sector, which maybe wouldn’t be as smooth in the UK.

In countries like Indonesia and Philippines, where many people just don’t have bank accounts, cashless is also popular with companies providing mobile wallets/cashless possibilities. Of course cash will remain king in these places for a long time, but cashless is not a hinderance and people of all ages are embracing it.

Cash only pubs are full of old c***s sitting nursing a pint for hours, reading the Daily Record and occasionally going to the bookies to check if they’re 2 Bob bet on the 2.40 at Aintree came up.

Card only places will keep out the undesirables IMO.

At least at cash only pubs, getting your pint is less likely to be delayed, by the person in front ordering a fancy coffee.

Why should accepting cash be optional?

Dunno, just think it should. It’s the way things are now and businesses should have the option to accept cash. What I’m saying is that they should be compelled to accept card and contactless payments. Even ice cream vans do it now. There is no excuse for barbers and Chinese takeaways.
