2021/2022 South Challenge Cup

Recommended Posts

Starting in 2007 the South Challenge Cup is contested by all tier 5 & below clubs south of the HL/LL dividing line. With the mass exodus from junior to senior football over the past few seasons the competition has ballooned in size & now stands at 161 clubs (excluding reserves) from the Lowland, East of Scotland, West of Scotland & South of Scotland Leagues. The most sucessful clubs are Spartans & East Kilbride with three wins each.

The competition's lineage goes back to 1931 as the South Challenge Cup is a successor to the South Qualifying Cup which was scrapped after the SFA reformed the Scottish Cup format.

In something very much unthinkable a few years ago the defending champions are Dunipace who saw off Bromhill in the much delayed 19/20 final played earlier this month.

Format for this season is regionalised into 4 'zones' for the first two rounds.

Westerton United might be an interesting bit of trivia if they never end up in the WoSFL. Can't think of any teams to be included in a senior cup draw or league and then never play.

It'll have happened sometime somewhere.

Edinburgh City EOS were hours from being an example in 2013-14: they were pulled the very same day EOS Qualifying League was drawn live on Castle FM.

Gretna Community quit SOSL in 1991-92 after the League Cup section and 7 league games - so never made their debut in the various knockout cups.

Ah couldn't find this thread so ended up posting in the EOSL thread.

Many inter-league ties this time round, ie between the two top leagues in East and West or between these leagues and the LL. I suppose the regionalisation will be minimising the East/West games for now

Even with the regionalisation there's a decent amount of inter-league games this round.

Cumbernauld United v. Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts being the only WoS Premier v. EoS Premier clash.

Jeanfield Swifts v. Broomhill, Berwick Rangers v. Broxburn, Darvel v. Gretna 2008, and LTHV v. Civil Service Strollers provide some LL v. WoS/EoS Premier match ups. Then there will be a decent amount of LL v. Tier 7+ clubs for people to once again debate the overall standing of the league.

LL = RED, WoS Premier = BLUE, EoS Premier = GREEN

Bo'ness Athletic     v    Gartcairn
Cumbernauld Colts     v    Rosyth
Bo'ness United         v    Kirkcaldy & Dysart
Burntisland Shipyard     v    University of Stirling
