Denmark v Scotland

Interesting to witness Denmark’s elevation to footballing super power after this result.
In their last qualifying campaign for Euro 2020 they finished second in their group behind the Swiss. They drew home and away with Ireland, drew with Georgia, drew with Switzerland and then lost two out of three group games at the Euros itself.
They’re a decent side but nothing more, they certainly won’t be winning the World Cup next year. Getting them out of pot one was a huge slice of luck which we haven’t capitalised on at all. Just because they’re much better than us doesn’t mean they’re very good.

Not sure i agree with this. They had 7 players out on wednesday night and showed a lot of depth . This could be something of a golden generation for the danes.

You can see the quality they have as they can consistently carry out their game plan which is reminiscent of belgium to an extent , in that they control the game high uo the pitch then use their 2 advanced midfiders to up the pace momentarily to find a killer pass. They are also super adept at set pieces from what ive seen over their last 4 games or so.

In the last 35-odd games, the only teams who’ve beaten them are Belgium, England and Finland (when they had to keep on playing after Eriksen collapsed). They’ve taken 4 off Austria, Russia and Wales recently. They’re clearly a quality side and worthy of their pot 1 place.

Aye, I wouldn't realistically expect them to win the tournament, but it wouldn't be a surprise if Denmark found themselves in the semis next year. They're a very solid unit, are clearly improving, and there aren't many European nations that you'd put the rent on to beat them.

In twenty-one World Cups, we've only had eight winners, and none of them could have been classed as outsiders since the Germans won their first in 1954. For whatever reason, it's not a tournament that lends itself to being won by talented/in-form sides with lesser pedigree. It certainly wasn't absurd to think they had a good chance at the Euros, though, and many people did.

Denmark are clearly an excellent and still improving side. A combination of a little bit more depth in the squad, but also the squad not being faced with a pretty awful situation to deal with from the outset of the tournament aswell as (IIRC) some extensive travel in the KO stages could easily see them match their Euros performance or better it. They were eeked out despite being visibly burst in the previous match, in ET only with the aid of a dodgy penalty, in an away game against England.

Aye, it was a shame to see them run out of steam in the semi-final, and not just because of who they were playing. The whole side looked knackered by the sixty minute mark, having been the equal of their hosts up to then, and it's incredible they got that far considering the events of the first game.

In order for a Pot 3 or Pot 4 team to qualify for tournaments, you need a couple of things to happen.

1. You need to be improving significantly, and playing above your level

2. You need your Pot 1 and, likely, your Pot 2 team to be on the way down or having been elevated beyond their ability through fortuitous rankings.  This happened to Iceland with Netherlands implosion, but they also got a few results as per point 3.

3. Get a landmark result.  That is how Poland and Ireland finished above us in the 2016 European qualifiers by beating Germany.

Denmark are unfortunately a Pot 1 team on the way up - they are visibly a stronger side than they were two years ago.  Austria on the other hand seem perfectly capable of implosion at any time.  Israel have taken advantage of it, and we must too.

We are struggling with point 1, and point 2 was handed to us on a plate on Saturday night.  Point 3 is up to us - beating Austria away would certainly count against that.

We've seen Greece (Pot 1 in 2015), Netherlands (Pot 1 in 2015), Bosnia (Pot 1 in 2015), Hungary (Pot 2 in 2015), Ireland (Pot 2 in 2015!) all either collapse, or give someone an opportunity to jump them.  It's how Iceland, Wales, Finland, and Albania have all qualified in recent years.

We had a chance in 2016 and didn't take it.  It's just been offered to us again.

Everyone keeps dismissing Israel, but they represent a genuine challenge for 2nd place having demolished Austria, Moldova and the Faroes.

The Danish coach and Steve Clark have said the same things praising them as a team and I remember the Czech coach saying Israel were the toughest team they played in last year's nation's league.
