Your Clubs Least Expected Win.

This is the one that springs to mind for me. We were absolute murder that season and looked doomed to our first relegation... Caley were having a decent season.

That was (is?) the biggest doing we've ever handed out to them. It being under the lights on their own patch made it quite enjoyable.

Tassos Venetis will forever be a legend for that one game.

Accies 0, Cumdog 2.

The triggerhappy Tash pulled a panic punt and ditched Fenlon after a loss to Hearts. I think Hibs had won as many as they'd lost at that point.

In came Terry Butcher... to general approval. Maybe not overwhelming "Daffy Duck GIF" excitement, but the vast majority were happy with the appointment. Sluggish start for Big Tel, but three wins in a week over Christmas / New Year, culminating in an Embra derby win.

One win in the next 19 games saw Hibs heading to Hamilton for the relegation play-off. Most fans would have bitten your hand off for a draw. A 2-0 win meant top flight survival was all but guaranteed.

Hard to argue with any of that, though I might add in the cup replay against Rangers in 2010. They had horsed us 7-1 at Ibrox earlier in the season with the wotsit-munching pundit scoring 5, and we somehow came back from 3-1 down at Ibrox to sneak a replay, before David Robertson's arse helped us continue the journey to eventual glory.

I had forgot that one.  When you put it into context of the 7-1 game you are absolutely right.  I had hurt my back and was not able to go to the replay do had to watch it at home.

Robertson arses it in and next second I am jumping about like an eejit and was in the car and in Frews by the time my mates got in.  It is amazing what a wee shot of adrenaline can do to ya!

Another game where you suddenly think...hold on a second...we can actually win it here.  Which we did.

Lost 2-1 to Airdrie the following Saturday though.

And lost the second leg at home to Monaco but still managed to go through.

One of the most frustrating things following United during those days... inconsistency.

2005 Rangers 0 United 1.  The one that does stick in my head. An early goal by Stuart Duff...I will say that again...by Stuart Duff and heroics in goal by Tony Bullock gave Rangers their first home defeat of the season and went a long way to keeping us up.

Was watching Stuart Duff last Wed playing for Banks o Dee, still going strong :)

Rangers 1 Motherwell 3
(Play-off first leg 28/5/2015)

Remember leaving Paisley after an already relegated St Mirren came from behind to beat us 2-1 and condemn us to the play-offs, they also sang “You’re going down with the St Mirren” in process.

Most folk had already written us off regardless of whether Hibs or Rangers won the play-off semi final and I remember heading through to Ibrox with my mate discussing just keeping Rangers to a 1 goal lead taking them back to Fir Park.

3-0 up inside 50 minutes, rangers fans heading for the subway and Ainsworth should’ve made it 4.

Still my favourite day out watching Motherwell.

Celtic vs Dundee

Celtic had won the league.

Not many had predicted you'd beat Celtic 5-1, having already been relegated in around 1980ish either.

For us, there's been the odd giant killing that was by definition, unexpected.  Nominations would include Aberdeen at Hampden and three wins over New Rangers.

I'd pick the mundane sounding win at Raith Rovers last January though.

In our shortened season, we'd taken 4 points from 27 in the first of 3 rounds of 9 matches.  We'd recently shipped 6 at Tynecastle and attracted much deserved ridicule by inexplicably admitting George Galloway to our Boxing Day defeat from Dundee just as the pandemic peaked.  During the warm up at Starks, our goalkeeper hurt himself, meaning a 16 year old school pupil took over.

Incredibly, we won 2-0, sparking a run of 20 points from the middle third of the season that proved just enough to keep us safe, when we got shit towards the end again.

Beating Raith Rovers doesn't sound like it should ever come as a huge surprise.  That day, however, it looked absolutely inconceivable at kick-off.

Any win v either of the Old Firm is fairly unexpected but especially away from home.

2 notable examples being a 2-0 win at Parkhead in November 1997 with Owen Coyle deflecting one I’m off Lee McCullochs arse before Regi Blinker got sent off and Mickey Weir added the second via a last minute breakaway.

The other was spoiling deceased Rangers 9 in a row celebrations in May 1997. This was bang in the middle of the period off my life where I stupidly went to see Motherwell play at these grounds but there was no way I was going to that one. Probably just as well looking back.

One that often gets mentioned is the 1991 semi final replay against Celtic, you only get one chance against the Old Firm etc.  But my memory is that we had beaten them at Parkhead the previous week and on the night we were popping them in from 40 yards.

No issues with any of that but the most recent thrashing of the unbeaten Sevconians with a mediocre (at best) squad and a havering untried manager WAS completely unexpected. Especially after the sound thrashing that the Sheepies gave us.

In all these other games we had some hope that the talent in the squad would help us through (I must add that the goal scoring abilities of David Robertson's arse were previously unknown of course. Maybe it was a training ground move?) I mean who would have expected Pawlett to be a midfield dynamo with a great engine after the previous seasons of fuel starvation and dodgy distribution? I expected a loss and probably a big loss. I can't believe there were many who didn't.

The worst Morton team in history winning 1-0 at Celtic Park in the League Cup in 2013.

How a team that bad managed that was incredible, especially considering they managed to finish bottom of a division including Dumbarton, Alloa and Cowdenbeath by  14 points and lost the final game of the season 10-2 at Hamilton.

Celtic have of course lost to Championship (or First Division) clubs before, but maybe it’s paranoia from me to think our win there is often overlooked compared to Inverness, Clyde and Ross County’s wins. Perhaps it’s because the League Cup is lower profile, but our win there was a much bigger shock than any of those results- all were solid second tier teams, whilst that Morton team was an absolute gang.

Glorious.

Aberdeen FC still appreciates this
