Peterhead v Airdrie 21/8

Recommended Posts

Fantastic performance and result,  the team were in total control most of the game,     seemed to play at a tempo Peter head struggled with especially in the first half..

3 goals but I felt we could easily have had a few more, really encouraging signs..

Peter head struggled till big McLean came on, then they began to get up the pitch and cause problems,   apart from the Montrose debacle we have played decent passing football and we seem a better side than previous seasons.....

I interesting that no media are mentioning we are 6 players short due to covid,  the joys of lower league football...

It's going to be a long season for us I'm afraid and I can't see us getting out of the bottom 3. The scoreline flattered us as we didn't come to life until the last 15 minutes and it could easily been 4 or 5 but for the heroics of Long. Only 4 games into the season and we are looking at next weeks game at East Fife as a crunch relegation match.

Kept checking the club website/sports pages but I will have to accept our Pie and Bovril source. Hope those affected will be ok . PPV now my Saturday treat.

Turned out to be a treat indeed. Despite the foggy scenes  which left me sometimes unsure who was coming away with the ball I had an enjoyable 80 minutes. When Brown hit that cracker I was a wee bit concerned it was going to be a Dumbarton type collapse. Thankfully McLean only got it too late but this was an important win especially given the squad numbers. Thanks also to the Peterhead commentator for letting me know who was who, even if the camera missed out on the third. The commentators were balanced and no more partial than I'd expect.

To the game itself and it was a bit of a surprise to see that back 4 but Fordyce and McCabe did not seem under much pressure until that last 10 minutes. That was largely due to Peterhead being a bit over inclined to go for safe touches, and that our three were able to steal the ball to create good attacks. We should have been in the lead but for Long's excellent saves. It is true that the one good move by Peterhead could have got the equaliser but Currie did what Long was doing. The McCabe free kick was a thing of beauty and a one goal lead should have been more. Good start to the second half took the game to Peterhead and I always felt we could snatch a 2nd. Easton's passing and play was good all day but it was smart play to allow Smith inside Conroy. I was too busy enjoying that Conroy moment,  to enter the "was it a penalty" debate but it was great to get the 2nd. As said I only guessed that we had scored the third when our defenders ran up the park. Gallagher ought to have got a 4th which would have saved me that last wee uncertqin spell.

We deserved to win and were the better side but we need to stop conceding late on. Thought Frizzell disappeared but it was a physically demanding game.. For Peterhead I thought Mulligan (?) looked really good but our wee guy stuck to it. Ian Murray does have the winning streak over Jim McInally so a great night for me.

For the 2nd week on the trot Brett long was our best player by far & avoided  5 or 6 goal drubbing. We now seem incapable of quickly closing teams down as we did a few games ago. Not sure if McLean was carrying a knock or something but until he came on for the last 20mins  we hardly threatened. Felt sorry for Payne today as well as being isolated before Rusty came on he was our best left back as well. Was surprized when Ritchie was subbed thought we could have taken either full back off to avoid further damage to them. The only highlight was Scott Browns screamer. We are capable but not producing and need to find a win shortly.

Got what out what we put into that game.
Maybe by the end of the season the players will actually look like a team.
As for left back, if that's it for the season then we are fucked.

Left back been an issue since Paddy Boyle left, Conroy is not the answer. I struggle to see McInally’s fascination with him. Supposedly a “set-piece specialist” but I’m yet to see him produce anything in that area either tbh

He never managed to specialise in them during his time with us either.

Been a bug bear of mine for a while that Ryan feels the need to come over from his own position to take all the corners as if nobody else could take at least some of them, Stevie Noble used to do the same then was out of position when the other team broke up the park. We had a spell that if we won a corner the other team had nearly as much chance of scoring on the break as we did from the corner. Think we should be trying to get Ryan facing play as much as possible as we saw saw yesterday if turned it can take his good foot out of play resulting in the penalty. As for freekicks think he was unlucky once but more often than not missed the target. Dont want to pick on him but the corner thing has been going on for ages without bearing much goals so needs changed.

Sadly not ITK,  good logical guess,   it worked well, I wouldn't play with fire twice, if the centre half S are still out isolating for the Allo a game, I would sign or loan a new centre back, especially with Lyons probably out till new year..
