Getting the band back together: your best former players XI (on current form)

Recommended Posts

GK-
Matija Sarkic (On loan at Birmingham from Wolves)

CB-
Declan Gallagher (Aberdeen)
Craig Halkett (Hearts)
Ciaron Brown (Cardiff)

LWB-
Jullien Serrano (AS Monaco)

RWB-
Robert Snodgrass (West Brom)

CM-
Hakeem Odoffin (Rotherham)
Wes Hoolahan (Cambridge United)
Shaun Byrne (Dundee)

ST-
Lyndon Dykes (QPR)
Leigh Griffiths (Celtic)

Snodgrass has the unfortunate destiny of being Martindale'd into wing back despite being a winger but apart from that, it's a very strong side. Especially up front, a Griffiths and Dykes partnership would utterly romp the league if Griffiths isn't in a strop or off on a mad one.

No current players allowed:

GK - Vaclav Hladky
RB - Paul McGinn
LB - Paul Dummett
CB - Alfie Jones
CB - Akin Famewo
CM - John McGinn
CM - Kenny McLean
CM - Anders Dreyer
RW - Lewis Morgan
LW - Graham Carey
CF - Stephane Bahoken (one of the worst I've ever seen play for us but what a career he's having)

Subs (last season's 9 subs rule in effect):
Christophe Dilo
Harry Davis
Sean McLoughlin
Kyle Magennis
Kieran Sadlier
Aaron Mooy
Ilkay Durmus
Lawrence Shankland
Ross Stewart

What a team that would be. What a bench as well!

Outrageous really that there's no place for guys who have had good/great careers like Nigel Hasselbaink, Isma, Charlie Adam, Jon Obika, Jake Doyle-Hayes, Stevie Mallan, Ryan Hardie,

Gordon

Lustig Ajer Van Dijk Tierney

Ntcham McGregor Armstrong

Kyogo Dembele Elyonoussi

Bit of a mix between current form (Gordon and Kyogo) and what you know they can be like on their day (Van Dijk and Ntcham). Some team though, the back line will probably end their careers with more transfer revenue than Celtic will ever spend.

Anyway here's mine, given they'll all be mostly from when he played in the Premiership.

OFW (most of our other former keepers have retired)

S. Rooney

McCart

Warren

G. Shinnie

Allan

Christie

Hayes

Watkins

A. Rooney

D. Mackay

That was tough given a lot of our great players from 2012-15 have retired or are now playing part time somewhere.

Have any of the St Mirren lads picked Popescu yet? We were reliably informed that he wasn't absolutely terrible AND YET

He was genuinely on my shortlist but there were better players I'd forgotten about.

I know you released him; was he not good, then? Thought he'd stroll the Championship.

Bahoken is a fantastic shout. Totally forgot about him/his development since leaving us.

I'd have to squeeze Mooy in, I think, so I'd go:

---------------- Hladky ---------------

McGinn - McLoughlin - Famewo - Dummett

----------- Mclean - McGinn ------------

------- Morgan - Mooy - Durmus --------

--------------- Bahoken ---------------

Probably a case of when, not if, that team's winning the league, tbh.

I'd drop Sadlier in favour of Mallan, and I'd find room on the bench for Graham Carey, too. Still only 32 and you never know when that left foot's coming in handy.

Marciano (Feyenoord)

Doherty (Tottenham) Bamba (Middlesbrough) Fontaine (Dundee) Booth (St Johnstone)

Brown (Aberdeen)

McGinn (Villa) Henderson (Empoli)

Gauld (Vancouver)

MacLaren (Melbourne) Cummings (Dundee)

It’s not the best at the back and the two strikers wouldn’t give you anything outside of the box. Thought about putting Griffiths in but he’s a shambles these days, I’d prefer the generally benched at Dundee Cumdog.

This team is fairly stinking compared to others I've seen haha.

No saying it’s a bad team, but given that County - especially under Derek Adams - used to sign about a hundred players a season, I’m a bit surprised that there aren’t more who’ve turned out very decent.

Then I remembered that Adams tended to sign utter nonsense like Jim Fenlon, and it made more sense.

Adams would sign 7 or 8 and about 2 would be good. Liam Boyce was his biggest coup as he ended up being the clubs greatest ever player (IMO)

Jim Fenlon and Jon Bateson are two of the worst he brought in. Both managed to find a way to jump and actually get smaller while they were in the air.

Formatting is rubbish but:

Bachmann

Naismith Souttar Songo'o Reid

Irvine Kiss Carey

Schalk Boyce Stewart

Struggled for defenders. Oikonomou and Cikos are playing second tier in Cyprus and Poland! I'm also assuming that Filip Kiss is still good despite playing in Saudi, and that CSKA Sofia are a step up from County.

I also discovered that Kevin Luckassen is in the Turkish top-flight now. Or according to Wikipedia, anyway.
