Getting the band back together: your best former players XI (on current form)

Recommended Posts

Inspired by my own ramblings on the St Mirren thread, what is the best XI/squad you can assemble based on your team's former players?

Rules:

  • They must have played at least one first team game for you.
  • They must still be playing, and you're picking them on current age/form (ie if they're 42 and still playing in the juniors, you're getting the 42-year-old version).
  • You've got to make an effort at picking them in their correct positions (sadly for St Mirren fans you can't pick 11 midfielders*).

* Seriously, we have genuine class in the middle of the park, and f**k all else around the rest of the team. This will not be a balanced team.

Can't think of another right back we've had that still plays other than Tait. Marv wasnt a left back with us, but think we was with Boro. Shame moult is crocked again. I usually miss an obvious one with these things.

Randolph

Tait

Kipre

Aldred

Marvin Jonhson

Turnbull

Campbell

Gorrin

Cole

Bowman

Scott

Assuming none of the current squad are available, I sense this might highlight how lucky we've been the last 10 years!

A.McGregor

D.McNamara--J.Shaughnessey--B.Easton--S.Tanser

G.Edwards  --M.Abeid--M.Butcher--N.Hasselbaink

T.Watt--G.Melamed

Ok, so having done this, it simply highlights to me that very few players leave saints and go on to do well. Also maybe highlights the fact that the current squad is very, very good and we're lucky to have them. Of the players in the team above the only ones who'd improve us are McGregor, Edwards and Abeid I'd say. The strikers are much of a muchness and the defence is pretty physically weak compared to what we've got now.

Daniel Bachman

SOD, Findlay, Del Fabro, Taylor

Midfield is pretty hard:

JJ……er…..Power, Kiltie. Can I take Burke please?

Brophy, Lafferty,

Would finish top 5 in the Premiership I reckon and would win the Championship if we had them for this season. That was pretty hard though for Kilmarnock and I’m sure I’ve missed some.

I'm assuming that current players are out of bounds as a few of them would be in otherwise.

Matija Sarkic

Declan Gallagher, Craig Halkett, Jon Guthrie, Julien Serrano

Murray Davidson, Shaun Byrne, Andrew Halliday

Leigh Griffiths, Lyndon Dykes, Robert Snodgrass

Reckon that team could give most in this division a good run...top 6 for sure

Slim pickings for RB and LB...

Stevie Hammell's retired which pretty much leaves the alternative choices as Joe Chalmers, Stephen Hendrie or Richard Tait.

Tait gets RB ahead of amongst others Josh Law and Tom Hateley. The only alternative I'd have considered would be Chris Cadden but not only is he a snake, he's also barely kicked a ball since he left Fir Park.

If his knees hadn't turned to Weetabix Moult would have been the obvious choice at centre forward but as it stands big Lukas is still kicking a baw in the Championship.

Randolph
Tait Kipré Hutchinson Johnson
Campbell Gorrin Turnbull
Ainsworth Jutkiewicz Ariyibi

Very similar for me. Except Elyounoussi would be out for Scott Sinclair
