Really horrible. Already an extrememly desperate set of conditions, total powderkeg. Was an absolute nap that eventially someone would do this. You have to imagine that even if the Taliban keep their promise of no reprisals, any American or Western citizen left behind is meeting a grizly end at the hands of this IS K mob

Doesn’t matter what the leadership say.  Even if they have genuine intentions and mean this the people on the ground will act differently.

This is not a structured and disciplined organisation in the sense we’re used to.  Orders are not always followed.

Indeed. Which makes it all the madder that the US decided to withdraw from Afghanistan on the basis of guarantees given by an organisation that isn’t in the position to honour them even if it were itself so minded to do.

Yes it's utterly depressing that they have talked a good talk in Doha but it appears the US have made no enquiries, or they don't care, if the people on the ground can or are interested in becoming fairly moderate.

The Taliban have had to tell women and girls to stay at home until their fighters learn to respect them, I suspect that could take generations to happen if indeed it ever does meaning that the protections agreed to in the Doha agreement are basically pointless.

Very frustrating that no other NATO country was prepared to stay without America, begs the question what's the point of us having the ultimate deterrent if we (and France) still have to head for the exits just because America gives up, on a "forever war" although don't tell them they are still mucking about in Korea.

Nuclear capability is irrelevant here and we retain it as a defence against an entirely different threat, or as a political bargaining chip*

I think the point of the ultimate deterrent is to stop anyone dropping it on the UK rather than threatening Terry Taliban with it.
