East adventures in the Scottish Cup - 2021-22

As noted in another thread - an adjustment to the cup format means drastically improved opportunities for EOS clubs from this season.

Many will go straight into R1 - alongside the Lowland & Highland clubs - putting them only 1 win from SPFL opposition, 2 from Championshop and 3 from Premiership. Those who don't get byes only have to win 1 preliminary tie to reach R1.

Preliminary will be drawn week commencing Monday 9th August - date tbc - with 11 ties & 15 byes.

Preliminary ties are Saturday 28th August.

Dalkeith, Dunbar, Sauchie, Clydebank, Cumnock plus Darvel make their debuts... Musselburgh, Auchinleck plus Irvine Meadow appear for first time as members having previously entered as qualifiers. Burntisland, Girvan plus Golspie also return after taking option to sit-out last season.

Some formidable West Premier opponents and similarly Banks o'Dee are no pushovers.

Rather impressively 2/3 of entrants hail from EOSL:

East of Scotland League (24)
Premier Division (16)
Blackburn United, Broxburn Athletic, Camelon, Dunbar United, Dundonald Bluebell, Hill of Beath Hawthorn, Jeanfield Swifts, Linlithgow Rose, Lothian Thistle HV, Musselburgh Athletic, Newtongrange Star, Penicuik Athletic, Sauchie, Tranent, Tynecastle, Whitehill Welfare
First Division (8)     Burntisland Shipyard, Coldstream, Dalkeith Thistle, Dunipace, Easthouses Lily, Haddington Athletic, Hawick RAU, Preston Athletic

West of Scotland League (7)
Premier Division (5)
Auchinleck Talbot, Clydebank, Cumnock, Darvel, Irvine Meadow
First Division (2)     Girvan, Glasgow University

South of Scotland League (4)     Newton Stewart, St Cuthbert Wanderers, Threave Rovers, Wigtown & Bladnoch

North Caledonian League (1)     Golspie Sutherland

North Juniors (1)     Banks o'Dee

By my reckoning the odds are 9 or 10 out of 24 clubs should get byes tomorrow.

(Remember for some reason these are entirely random so the First Division clubs plus Girvan and Glasgow Uni can obtain them).

Of the remaining 14 or 15 about 2/3 of them should draw each other.

Of course is all luck of the draw.

Those who do have to play external opponents probably want to avoid the West Premier quintuple or Banks o'Dee.

With 6 premier teams it means games can be brought forward.

Easy options for camelon would be moving sauchie game from midweek, hill of beath game from mid week at end of September or the best option be move lthv game from midweek in November as that has no chance of us playing Saturday Tuesday Saturday at home in November.

Good luck to all EOS contestants tomorrow.

I'd be hopeful of at least 16 clubs featuring in R1... 8 already got byes; there are 5 all-EOS ties (where Burntisland, Penicuik, Blackburn, Jeanfield and Broxburn are probably favourites albeit Dundonald and Dunbar in particular might have a lot to say about that); and there are 6 other games.

Of those a misfiring Linlithgow face a tough tie at home v BoD, who routinely obliterate most opposition great and small, but it's hard to know how that translates into matches against clubs outwith the north-east. Similarly story with Threave who are the cream of SOS but that means a big fish in a shallow pond visiting a resurgent Preston. Tynecastle and Hawick will be favourites... Musselburgh and struggling Coldstream will be underdogs and might take a replay.

Postponements, abandonments or replays try again next Saturday; except Dundonald v Penicuik (this Tuesday) and Blackburn v Easthouses (this Wednesday only if postponed/abandoned).

"Hawick will be favourites"

Not an oft typed sentence...

and not deserved either as it proves.

Blackburn United 2-1 Easthouses Lily
Burntisland Shipyard 1-1 Dalkeith Thistle
Dunbar United 3-1 Broxburn Athletic
Dundonald Bluebell 1-3 Penicuik Athletic
Hawick RAU 0-2 Golspie Sutherland
Irvine Meadow 2-1 Musselburgh Athletic
Jeanfield Swifts 4-1 Whitehill Welfare
Linlithgow Rose 1-2 Banks o'Dee
Newton Stewart 1-3 Coldstream

Disappointment for Hawick, Musselburgh and Linlithgow.

Great result for Dunbar v Broxburn. Great attendance and support today. Weathered the storm last 15/20 mins of first half but well deserved win.

Hopefully another home tie in next round.

What a day for the club and community.

Gifted 3 goals and Broxburn missed 3 really good chances at 1-1, but seriously all the best to Dunbar in the next rounds.  Broxburn did it a few years ago and it can be a real adventure.    Always a great place to visit.
